GWC Re-Watch Frak Party: Litmus

It’s weekseven of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season one episode “Litmus.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

See you here all week!

I don’t know where to post this, and perhaps I’m bragging a bit, but I’ve already gotten five new people hooked on battlestar (although I ended up losing my first season’s dvd’s to a friend who moved to Boulder) … I’m kind of wondering how many people everyone else got hooked on the show … we just might collectively be responsible for a fifth season … who knows? oh I’m way behind on the podcasts, but apple finally fixed the problem that made them crash on my ipod, so I can listen to them in the car again … you guys are way better than talk radio, thanks for keeping up the good work.

  2. Josh says:

Hey, I went to Space Camp!

But I went to the one in Huntzville, Alabama. Sadly, I never ran into(litterally nor figurativly) Alan Shepard.

  3. Audra says:

eric-michael – Way to go! Sean got Chuck and me hooked on BSG, and I think in turn we’ve gotten at least four other people into it. It’s great when a friend gives you a good recommendation- that’s how we got into Firefly as well.

  4. Dr_P says:

I’ve certainly encouraged a lot of people to watch Battlestar Galactica and even published a review of it on my favorite forum but how many people actually listened and cared is debateable.

Also I love this episode but the one thing I want to say now is I would not want to be the soldier who has to choose between Odama and the Judge woman. I mean either choice could go wrong and for an extra to make thats a pretty tough place to be put in.

  5. 13th Cylon says:

Ha ha! I LOVED the bit with Cally saying “Well, the Chief can’t be a Cylon”. lol

Ugh, Jammer’s back. I always did hate that guy. The “every man for himself” mentality worked out really well for you, didn’t it?

  6. eyeless says:

My success rate in conversions is about 10%.

Which amounts to I think 6 converts. And the other 90 percent will hopefully come around.

Common excuse: “I don’t get cable.” Upon hearing this, all loyal BSG fans are obligated to provide their friends with a free ride to Blockbuster or Best Buy.

  7. Josh says:

All BSG episodes are also available on iTunes.

So they can’t use the “no cable” excuse

  8. Miguel in Los Angeles says:

I really enjoyed your new podcast. Seriously guys, you weren’t having an “off” night at all. In fact, I wanted to propose something that I think might shake things up for you guys and provide a new avenue for expressing your ideas.

I propose that the watercooler hosts create a new podcast that is free form. I don’t have any better way to describe it other than a variety podcast where you guys could talk about anything. Together, you all have a dynamic, comedic quality. It would be really entertaining for us, the listeners, as well as for you, the hosts.

I just thought I’d get that out there somehow.

The best example I can give (hopefully there are some LOST fans among the posters) is the popular Jay and Jack podcast. During the regular season they provide biweekly podcasts covering the all things LOST. However, during the off season they do a Ramblecast where they talk about movies, tv shows, sports, etc. Anything they want.

I just thought I’d put in my two goo-covered cents.

  9. Tony says:

I think I got 9 people converted so far (6 in the US, and 3 back in France). Most of them only knew about the classic show and gave me a saddened look when I told them it was the best show on tv these days. After a bit (a lot) of convincing they finally got the first season on dvd (mainly to… stop me talking) and got addicted in turn. I also got 2 new listerner to Galactica Watercooler 🙂

  10. BoxytheBoxed says:

im at 1/2 he watches sason 3.0
    not anymore though
    which ep. was this again?
o yeah and i finished my personla reawatch

  11. Hybrid Master says:

I’ve officially got 3 people hooked and 2 of them are my spiritual teachers/gurus!!!
We all collectively believe/know that these recurring themes that keep popping up in science fiction and many genres about fear of AI, the possibility of a past/future entanglement/inner conflict with our own creative abilities, is not just a coincidence. Shows like BSG, in the amazing intelligent way it is done, trigger something in us. Now, I’m not saying I’m thinking we’re all just sleeper agents, or that this scenario played out exactly in our past, I’m just saying that there are some recurring themes and “we’ve all done this before” is present in most spiritual literature.

It’s also just really great drama 🙂

Other Comments: Jammer also gets on my frakking nerves and always did….

Litmus: very interesting big sweep turnaround on Adama! In Litmus he ends the trial and investigation, and in Crossroads he is shut down in his attempt to do the exact same thing. Lee, however, is equally whiny in both episodes….

  12. BoxytheBoxed says:

I goot a good story:OK so im the princpal of my 12 member percussion ensamble, and were doing a latin song, and Im starting conducting, and ending it, and im playing on the podium, and i made the poor middleschool kids call me ‘god’ and say sir…sir, god, sir i had the’hands of god’as conducting and cut off, and one of the kids was talking, and i said you stop tsalking, and i said’you now your called Hotdog’, and i had someone called Starbuck, and Cat, and stinger. It was quite amusing
its all true, and Apollos parents are rabid BSG fans

  13. BoxytheBoxed says:

    Audra nice drums
no starbucks Why we dont drunk(and screw)
i posted this exact thing months ago, when someone did the name above the head thing,, like Halo, i made a list of what song owuld play when the centurions looked at them
Tighs is Canidian Idot, yes i like Weird al
The Furor and Hail Ceaser by AC/Dc would be martial law tigh
Leews would be “she loves you”beatols

  14. BoxytheBoxed says:

    hehehehe i thibk its beautiful

working on a BSG cylon attack one

  15. BoxytheBoxed says:

Seattle really COOL OOO I WANNA GO so pretty
im going to Oregon for camp, maby i can go WIPDEEDEE YAHOO

  16. Gray says:

Here’s something I always get sort of distracted by during Litmus: when Roslin uses the phrase “witch-hunt” to describe the goings on. What is she referencing? Did the colonials have witch hunts? Is it the kind of thing we’re just supposed to assume as a universal phrase?

That’s just me though and I freely admit that I’m a dork.

  17. 13th Cylon says:

Gray- It’s possible, because they had book burnings.

I’ve got zero people hooked. My brother turned me onto it and my parents could care less (though they did watch “Pegasus” with me and demanded to see the next episode but couldn’t start from the top with the miniseries for some reason). The funny thing is that they’re OBSESSED with “Lost”, which is as (or more) serialized as BSG.

  18. Hybrid Master says:

That 4 episode arc with Pegasus messed with a LOT of people – I also had a couple of people watching into the wee hours of the night on that one…..

  19. Nothechief says:

Just wanted to comment on the fact that the pilot that Lucy Lawless was working on, “Football wives” (The US version of the UK show “Footballers wives”), wasn’t picked up this week by ABC, which means that now there’s more of a chance to see Number Three / D’anna Biers back in the show, be it in the Pegasus movies or the Fourth season, let’s just cross our fingers.

  20. Gray says:

I have hooked at least three new people in the last month or so. One of which was during a graduation party thrown by my friend’s parents last week. It was definitely on the upscale side and I spent thirty embarrasingly impassioned moments leaning over the back of a chaise lounge so the person could hear me. She seemed genuinely committed to at least watching it. She used to really love Alias so I think she has a shot. Also, over some wine and Italian last week I also think I got one of my friend Casey’s mom into it.

    That is all 🙂

  21. Tony says:

Btw, thanks Chuck for your advice. I checked Bear McCreary’s blog posts about the different musical themes, a great read. I can’t help but notice and appreciate much better the different themes now when I’m re-watching an episode. Plus, where else would you learn that they actually used toasters as instruments for the Cylon Theme? frakkin’ genius… 🙂

  22. Gray says:

    Correction

My friend Casey’s mom. (he’s got one)

  23. Pike says:

So, no relation to Heather, then.

  24. BoxytheBoxed says:

“Seattle really COOL OOO I WANNA GO so pretty
im going to Oregon for camp, maby i can go WIPDEEDEE YAHOO”
sorry aboot that one i was listening to last weeks cast, at the end with the scifi museum. I started cracking up at like 10 PM, i was listenign to it, insteed of sleeping and my parents yelled at me. I like in Orlando, close enogh to Tampa. That part could have been ebtter than”thirty of oyur years martha”
also ive decided that Sean and Audra on par with the cool part
my mom wont let me go, yes i asked her

  25. 13th Cylon says:

Boxy- Just wait a couple yahrens. Don’t want to achieve all your life goals by the age of 20, do you? lol

NoTheChief- I’d love to see Xena back. “Final Cut” was the first episode I saw, so Ms. Lawless (what a bad ass name) has a special place in my heart.

Also (VERY off topic), last night on “Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld” they read an email I sent! It’s a really funny show on FOX News (I’m sure many of you now hate me lol) where they talk about lighter news items with people like voice actor Billy West (“Futurama”- very funny guy). Probably nobody watches since it comes on at 2 AM. Oh well. 🙂

  26. Pike says:

    13th, I’m intrigued. Unfortunately, I can’t be up at 2:00am these days.

    Thank the gods for piratebay…

  27. 13th Cylon says:

Oh yes, I forgot how I was going to tie that in with BSG. Last night they had a segment about naked outdoor yoga. Boomer is into naked yoga. Which leads me to wonder, if Tigh & Co. have copies, do they do naked yoga? Tigh and Chief. Ha ha, there’s a nasty mental image.

  28. 13th Cylon says:

Pike- I understand. I’m not taking classes this summer, so I can stay up late like a wild child. Luckily I don’t go to work until 5:00, so it’s hard to really sleep in too late.

  29. Pike says:

Actually, Boomer is into nekid Tai Chi.

Probably watching that a bit too closely…

  30. 13th Cylon says:

Meh, it’s all naked to me. lol

And it looks like Adama got the news about “Crossroads, Pt II”:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/junk_sampan/hiatus.jpg

  31. Gray says:

Tigh does not do naked yoga, tai chi, or any variation thereof. Absolutely not.

    Thanks for that visual guys.

Now, if Anders wants to do some naked activities, fine. I’ll allow.

    Oh, and no Cavil either!

  32. The 13th Cylon says:

Tigh, Anders, Cheif, Doral, Cavil, Simon, and Leoben all do naked excercising. “Search your feelings, you know it to be true.”

  33. Brian CC says:

Off topic…I am such a dweeb. I just now realized that Audra’s song “In CIC” is done to the tune of a real pop song!

I had never even really heard of KT Tunstall before.

  34. The 13th Cylon says:

Hillary’s campaign is considering the song as their campaign song. Not the Audra version, the original

  35. BoxytheBoxed says:

    ewwwwwwwww Hitleray
13, no i need to be 21 to accomplish all my life goals, but close enough

  36. Luc says:

Technically, Tigh could not be doing naked yoga or tai chi until he goes patchless. Patchless Tigh, dancing at your table to the music of your choice… There’s a nice mental picture, enjoy!

  37. 13th Cylon says:

    Patchless charges more.

  38. Gray says:

And it’s not as much of a bargain cause there’s less to take off.

  39. Pike says:

Huh. I just got this email b/c I shop at Amazon occasionally:

    Dear Amazon.com Customer,
As someone who has purchased books from us, you might like to know about our newest editorial feature: the Significant Seven. Every month we choose our must-read books of the season and offer them all at a 40% discount, including this month’s spotlight pick, …

I can’t wait to see what their “FInal Five” selection is.

  40. BoxytheBoxed says:

SO which cylon do you think makes the hair gel for anders, an dthe sweaty grease they put on him andLee?

  41. BoxytheBoxed says:

Leon Kinsengton, did you do the Stargate Fancast?
for the sake of us all can we get off naked tigh and go back to nakes Sharon

  42. The 13th Cylon says:

Boxy- the hair gel might be that same goo they use in the tubs. It didn’t look too good in Baltar’s hair, all goopy and slimy, but maybe he got some premium goo.

  43. Stroogie says:

I’ve converted four people. It started first with my roommate. I’d been trying to get him to watch it with me, brushing off his weirded-out looks and sadly shaking head. Finally one night when he was off work and I had command of the remote, he had to watch. I was all giddy and hopeful. The episode came on, and it was: “Black Market”

I actually apologized to him. But he kept watching the show. I bought S1 on DVD, we got a pair of our married friends into it, and then the guy’s brother got hooked the last few weeks of S3. RDM should be paying me.

Speaking of naked Tigh…(and I’m not sure I got this link to work, but here goes)
    http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s265/dawninmi/BSG_1x03_Bastille_Day_004.jpg

  44. Stroogie says:

Crap. I’m trying one more time, then I’ll stop before I mess up the boards.
    http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2273845&hl=Things+you+wish+you'd+never+seen

  45. The 13th Cylon says:

That’s pretty funny and weird. lol

Why doesn’t the new BSG get awesome merchandise tie-inz like this:
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=WxFhmtCQ9d4

I’m glad my parents got me a bubble tuba instead of something like that. Because of the attached straw, I would’ve drank the bubble juice. Plus, I wouldn’t have been able to be as violent as I was with that tuba.

  46. BoxytheBoxed says:

no strogie it burnsbalar prob has the oatmean tub of hair gell, whitle they give everybody the regular stuff

  47. Audra says:

Brian CC- Yeah, the song was actually from 13th’s joke that the lyrics kept changing in his head to “Here in CIC,” so we did it!

13th – I saw the Hillary vote for the campaign song thing. I think they should so use our version, lol.
    P.S. Fox News?!?

Miguel – Thanks for the compliment. If we did do a free-form ‘cast, though, I’d probably start prattling on for hours about something I read and then we’d all be doomed. DOOMED! 😉

  48. Audra says:

Nice pic of semi-nude Tigh, lol… maybe he does Tigh Chi naked.

  49. adoracion says:

the dude in the tribunal hotseat who blames himself for the Causeway C catastrophy–is that the same dude who bites it on Kobol?

ugh. Jammer…. looking at this, he was a shapeshifter from the gate, eh?

  50. 13th Cylon says:

Audra- Yes, I confess, I’m a quasi- evil (small “e”- I’m only a Libertarian Republican, not an all out one. lol) Fox News watcher. But can you really blame me, I mean they did read my email on the air… And for the record I don’t watch any of the opinion shows (Gibson, O’Reilly, Hannity, etc).

Adoracion- Yes, and I think his name is Socinus. He was extra crispy after Kobol. I think it also explains why Tyrol was more than willing to go get the meds when there was little chance he’d survive.

And let me say once again, I’m glad to see Jammer gone! That guy was a punk and went to go work for the Cylonz. Double baddie.

  51. Gray says:

I always wondered about Socinus’ name. What it meant? Who named him after allergies?

And hey, 13th, you’re not the only one with vaguely defined politics. I’m a middle of the roady with left leaning social issue positions, strictly constructionist Constitutional views and an educational reformist.

  52. Ding says:

Jammer getting airlocked was one of the finer moments this season…

  53. adoracion says:

    Jammer with a small e?

season3 replay on cable–saw the naked sharon tai chi… and…

gaeta accidentally calling baltar “president baltar” while briefing roslin and adama about the “lion’s head” nebula. talk about theme songs! how about gaeta’s theme song? i vote for some R&B booty music. how about Usher’s “You Got It Bad”….?

  54. Stroogie says:

Guys, Hadrian was doing her job. She was assigned to find out who allowed a Cylon agent on the ship, into a weapons locker, and into a secured corridor where he blew himself up and killed people. Chief and Boomer got themselves caught up in her wake because they were having an affair and lying about it. She may come across as the bully for pursuing them, but if she had been allowed to go through with it, she may very well have uncovered the fact that Boomer left the hatch open.

I understand Adama’s reasons for letting Chief off the hook, because no one else could have filled his shoes. But this was the beginning of Adama’s long line of forgiving offenses that led to Lee’s Big Speech in Crossroads.

And hey, don’t the Cylons believe suicide is a mortal sin? Why did Doral blow himself up when both Head Six and Gina expressly tell Baltar that suicide is not allowed under the Cylon moral code? De’Anna had the chrome jobs shoot her so she could have her visions instead of killing herself, remember? If you resurrect after death, why outlaw suicide, unless it’s to prevent the Cylons from being wasteful with their spare bodies? Or perhaps it’s to prevent them from glimpsing the Final Five in the “space between life and death.”

  55. The 13th Cylon says:

I think Doral forgot that the bomb was strapped to him. It was convenient at the time to carry it that way, rather than in a duffel bag, but he did a Wile E. Coyote and forgot to take it off before he pushed the button.

And I’m convinced Adama recognized him because of his awful outfits. It’s pretty hard to forget those.
