It’s weeksix of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season one episode “You Can’t Go Home Again.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…
Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.
See you here all week!
First episode I ever saw of season 1. Made Starbuck my hero even more than she already was. Only wished that she wouldn’t exposit so much in the Raider.
I love this episode because it’s one of the few on a strange planet. The way she doesn’t get shot at the end of the episode is pretty clever. Tonight I had to make up for the last two rewatches that I missed (luckily you guys didn’t talk about them much on the recent podcasts).
And I know I’m not the only one watching these episodes with an added appreciation of Bear’s music, espically since he was so nice and talked for a long time about the music of the show.
Yeah, funny sidenote about the soundtrack. After listening to the podcast I feel unashamed to admit that I am one of those people who drives around listening to it and I even find myself playing it in my head at work.
When I first got the season 2 soundtrack I had “Prelude to War” on repeat in my car for days. Everyone who got in thought I was a huge nerd.
Yes, I usually just switch out the three soundtracks in my car and sometimes toss in “Serenity” just to switch it up. I finally got a thing to play my iPod, so I’ve been listening to Bowie, which is nice because I don’t want to listen it to it so much that I get sick of it (which I did with a lot of U2 stuff). “Prelude to War” is incredible. That, along with “Pegasus” and the two songs that follow are my favorites on that one. No wait, now that I think of it “Martial Law” is my favorite because that has parts of what becomes Tigh’s theme. lol
Yeah, I love Martial Law myself. It’s funny how the first few times you listen to the soundtrack there are pieces of the music you’re actively looking for. I was really eager to find Prelude, Martial, Wander and others and loved em but the other tracks sneak up on you and you start to find the ones you didn’t remember as well or hadn’t really considered before. Now, I can listen to pretty much the entire soundtrack without wanting to skip.
I have an IPod jack in my car and it’s the hottest thing since fire. I love it. It’s probably not the safest since I’m always darting looks at it though.
I love U2 but it’s definitely something you have to do in moderation. I hate when you listen to something too much and the effect is dulled.
I think I mentioned this before, but my absolute favorite track from the BSG soundtrack is “Passacaglia” from season 1, and so of course I also like “Allegro” from season 2 — and the variations on that theme in other tracks, too (e.g., “The Shape of Things to Come”). That’s an incredible theme and I wish Bear McCreary would say more about it on his website. Perhaps I’ll ask him to!
One question on this episode: How did Starbuck manage to tape her name to the underside of the Raider with a broken leg? I mean, I guess if I’m already “buying” the rest of the episode, taping her name on the underbelly is not such a stretch, but…
Also, maybe this has been discussed before, but could the fact that she is able to figure out and fly the Raider, let alone be the only one able to calm it down a few episodes from now, be evidence for her (possible) status as a Cylon?
I also, especially after listening to this week’s podcast, have to retract my support for the “suicidal Starbuck” theory after watching this episode. I suppose if she had truly been feeling suicidal over passing Zak, she wouldn’t have worked so hard to get off the planet in the Raider.
I might be the only one these days but I just don’t buy Starbuck as a Cylon. I just have this feeling and I think that while we are supposed to accept that Starbuck is special, i.e. the destiny thing, we are not obligated to assume that the destiny imbues her with any certain superpowers. I think we’ve been given enough support to believe that Starbuck is just great at a lot of things. Relationships? No. Flying, shooting, tactics, badassery? Yes.
I don’t like the idea of the show going in the direction that Starbuck is only Starbuck because of destiny or Cylonity, etc. It takes choice and chance and luck entirely from the equation.
with the sond tracks i like the s1 opening
SOme help…im doing a BSG parody for my schools filmfest im the writer/devloper/producer/actor/everything else. im using an actual $1200 toaster, its a farce/comedy any ideas. ill post the script in a few days
Well the tape could’ve easily been in part of her uniform for emergency situations.
And if Starbuck is a Cylon, that would explain why she was able to quickly figure out how to make that thing work.
or amby shes really lucky and the story needed it.
or amby the raider has feelings of being starbuck and did it to himself
i just finished Resserection ship part 2 and once i laughed again when the vipers are steaffing the ship, and theres an explosion and hunderds of naked 1/2/3/4/5/6/7s/z/z/s/z/s/z/s fly out
Like Gray, I also doubt Starbuck will be revealed as a Cylon. They seemingly have 1 big cylon reveal left, I suspect they will not waste that dramatic opportunity in order to explain how Starbuck reappeared. They probably have big plans for the final Cylon.
I also doubt she will be “Head Starbuck” to Apollo. First off, it would make her character very marginal. Also I clearly remember seeing both her Viper and Lee’s in the same shot, so she’s not purely imaginary.
I hope they don’t make her some kind of mystical being. Flesh and bone and very human Starbuck but with a new attitude would be preferable, in my opinion.
Maybe the Cylons who appeared during the finale are a different faction, ones who know where Earth is and believe their destiny is to guide humans back there, having long infiltrated humanity in order to facilitate this, including guiding Starbuck. Hey, maybe those Basestars will be full of Tighs, Chiefs, etc… and include a massive distillery.
I checked IMDB to see if I spelled “Tigh” correctly and they list that he will be acting in the upcoming 2 hour special along with pretty much the whole gang.
“Plot Outline:A two-hour Battlestar Galactica special that bridges the gap between seasons three and four. -IMDB”
So maybe we get some answers a little earlier than next year…
Cheers!
My Fave from the Season 2 ST is “Something Dark is coming”. Being a bit of a Drum Nerd, It has a Great drum line and a bit of a MArtial Feel later in the song , Yet gets that foreboding feel that just says that your gonna get Humped…
This Epi is one of my faves too . It truly shows off Starbucks Flying ( great CGI !) give some early insight into the Nature of the Raiders.
By the way, I have a question for Audra. Do you live your life to a soundtrack, cause you always seem to have a song snippet for the right occasion. I only ask, cause I have been accused of the same thing. My Ipod never leaves my ears at work and its always on in the car ( even short drive out for milk!) My wife makes like it’s endearing, but I’m sure that she finds it just a tiny bit annoying. Just wanted to ask and let you know that you have a fellow “Trackie” out here.
peace out
I just realized for the first time where the tape that she marks her Viper with come from. It’s from her first aid kit. It is the same tape she uses to bandage her knee soon after she cuts her parachute free.
Last week, one of you mentioned the fact that if you had a Gaius Baltar shirt, you would wear it but didn’t think there were any made. I have come to your rescue! I found a few Gaius specific ones:
http://www.bureau42.com/baltar/
http://www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-Chosen-Apparel-T-Shirt/dp/B000FUXOS0
http://www.cafepress.com/buy/2008/-/pv_design_prod/p_2016702.82365186/pNo_82365186/id_15253786/?click=true&CMP=KNC-F-ALL
Cafepress had a few Battlestar shirts that were chuckle worthy. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed these, my pick is the Baltar in 2008 one.
I just recently started listening to GWC and really enjoy it, keep up the great work!
PS – Cafepress also had an “I
Like someone up above me said, I don’t think the “Crossroads II” Starbuck is a head one. If so, then a large portion of our main characters are indeed crazy. We’d have Lee, Baltar, Bill (with his wife once a year), Six, Sharon, and Roslin all with the ability to see things which aren’t there in reality. And now that I think of it, with all that info, I’m building a case for “everyone’s a Cylon”- which is a theory I would HATE to see come true, it’d be like “WHOOPS! Baltar was dreaming all this when he was screwing Six and look, in the background, it’s a nuke!” I’d take to the streets if that happens.
L33t- You’re not the only one who is a little weird about musical habits. Everything reminds me of a song and I have been known to start saying lines if it fits into a conversation.
Yup 13th… your nuts. Certifiable.
Well I wouldn’t dispute that claim.
13th- Lines from BSG or just in general?
I love this episode, though I’m not usually a fan of Starbuck (don’t shoot me) but my favorite thing about this ep is it goes with my philosophy about life
Duct tape solves everything
hole in a pipe ==> Duct tape
Broken leg ==> Duct tape
Ensuring you don’t get destroyed in space ==> Duct tape.
13th…im mad like you too, or nuts whaever i am i like music
Dr_P i have to agree with everything i hate starbuck, and ducktape solves everything
I think this is time for an Audra song.
“You Can’t Go Home Again” a parody of “We Won’t Get Fooled Again” by The Who.
How ’bout it?
Good, I’m not the only one who obsessively listens to Firefly, Serenity, and BSG soundtracks. I love the soundtracks. Thanks, y’all, I no longer feel like a lonely geek (now I know I have company).
( sighs contentedly) I love being w/ my Peeps. It’s like I’m home…
Oh, I always repeat lines of EVERYTHING. Heck, I worked in a perfect “I always look good” line today. Luckily I didn’t get a “look in the mirror” response. lol
That exchange is from “33” between Bill and Tigh, in case you didn’t know.
Hi all,
Gotta say, I love this episode as well. It moves along at a cracking pace and somehow manages to impart a massive “human” element to it as well. Good to know that in anouth few hundred years duct tape will still be around!
I really enjoyed Starbuck / Kara in this as well. She truly is a daughter figure to papadama: had she been a normal crew member I reckon she’d be discharged by now. Maybe because papadama knew he needed her she was saved. We all saw how papadama jailed one of the deck crew for taking the heat for the chief (when he was knocking boots with Sharon), knowing full well it was the chief that was ultimately responsible.
Seems to me that if papadama needs you badly enough, he can “overlook” certain transgressions, whereas if he doesn’t need you at that moment, he’s content to follow the line without deviation. Good management?
More uses for Duct Tape in BSG….
A very effective way to silence whiny Lee…
Can fix busted model boats…
Sealing cracked Viper windows…
Holding Tighpatches in place…
One more use of Duct Tape in BSG…
Keep Elen Tigh from doing the ‘Swirl’.
Ellen Tigh should swirl as much as she can, gods rest her soul. I really miss her character. I’m still holding out that she’s numero cinco. Not only would that be cool, but we would also get a spinoff series after BSG is over with each episode ending with the Tigh couple getting killed in a brutal fashion (much like the R&D cartoons).
And guys, just a reminder, but Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) is starring in this Saturday night’s SciFi original movie. It’s called “The Last Sentinel” and it’s got mixed reviews (some say it’s Uwe Boll material, others say it’s a good B movie). It looks like a Mad Max type deal, with Katee as the protege to this rebel warrior and the two fight against drones… or something like that. Don “The Dragon” Wilson co-stars as her mentor.
Geez. It would be really sad if all the rave reviews she gets on BSG fall on deaf ears and Sackhoff doesn’t get some killer parts in the future. This holds true for most of the cast acutally. And this is just me being a girl but I hope KS gets famous enough to have a stylist.
Hi. About the “everyone is a cylon thing” I think there is possible substance to that. The humans *are* all cylons–just not the same cylons, rather they’re the descendants of cylons that developed thousands of years ago.
Here’s how it works. Humans make machines. Machines kill humans. Machines then engineer themselves into new humans, and after thousands of years they lose their machine aspects and think of themselves as humans. This cycle repeats, over and over again; thus the phrase “This has all happened before, and this will all happen again.”
Maybe there were never true humans to begin with. Another extension of this theory, is that the Final Five are in fact members of the first-generation original cylon race, preserved somehow throughout the ages.
Joe
Gray- that’s part of the problem with being in a sci-fi (or genre) show. It’s really easy to get typecast. But luckily, Sackhoff is getting another great role in David Eick’s re-invisioning of “The Bionic Woman”. From what I understand, she’s a fembot and the show is considered a shoe- in for getting picked up for a full season. Luckily, it won’t conflict with her BSG schedule.
13th-
That’s exciting. I hadn’t heard much about the show other than it’s basic premise and the fact that it’s gonna be somewhat BSG cast heavy. I wasn’t around for the original but I’d watch pretty much anything with KS, Aaron Douglas, M Hogan etc.
Yeah, it is a shame though. That cast is so talented and versatile so hopefully some of them will get breakout roles eventually.
I’ve put all three BSG Soundtracks on my iPod and in the same playlist. Then I play the playlist on shuffle.
At the moment Something Dark Is Coming is my favorite…
WHAT!!!! How can Black Market NOT be your favorite?!?!?? It is one of the greatest songs of all time, ALL TIME!!!
Well, That make 2 for “Something dark is coming”… Trak101 you roxor.
Leon… Prozac. I hear good things about Prozac.
a usiful duck tape solution
put it over HotDogs rash and BOOM raash free
i wanna see more EJO and Michel Hogan, there fantastic
Or a Only femaly show with just the female cast…mostly cylons though
Hi all,
I wanted to get in on the Starbuck debate. I could see a situation where she is ‘Headbuck’ but to more than one person. She might appear to several people, and for several episodes they will keep quiet about it to the rest of the crew…just like the 4 Cylon reveals will do.
Maybe they will need her prodding to get to Earth. Because, it would seem logical that the fleet would rethink the whole Earth-thing right? The Cylons found them on New Caprica, they are confirmed to be trying to find Earth. So why would the humans even bother with Earth at this point? Why would they bring a possible apocalypse to the last remaining human civilization out there? Do they assume whatever humans are on Earth would be able to defend themselves against the Cylons?
Starbuck’s character (head version or real) will be used to keep directing them there even when they don’t want to. Don’t know why, but when she was reintroduced postmortem, the most significant thing out of her mouth was about Earth.
“Something dark is coming” is great. One of my favorites. That scene of Baltar whining about facing public humiliation sticks out in my mind when I hear that song. And “Black Market” is great and I think the bonus version of it is even better.
In watching these recent episodes, I remembered one thing that stuck out to me when I first started watching the show. The characters get banged up and we see it for several weeks. Lee got his face scuffed up in “Bastille Day” and we continue to see his injuries for several episodes. Other shows would have the characters be good as new by the next show.
This is a continuity thing that I love BSG for. It always bugged me on stuff like Alias or Buffy or something where they are literally beaten almost to death and they show up sometimes in the same episode with nary a scratch.
Yay for not being afraid to make your attractive leads look absolutely horrendous. It kind of just adds to their rakish charm.
I DON’T NEED FRAKING PROZAK!!!!
i need my mommy….*sobs*
to 13th Cylon–which iPod thing did you get for your car? They look confusing to me. And some are expensive and require more than 1 part.
my email is sturm_86@yahoo.com if you dont mind.
Thanks.
I too listen to these in my car. Right Gray?

If you enjoy “Galactica Watercooler,” and haven’t voted yet for a best podcast, go cast your vote now! (This is not a solicted announcement!) Show our awesome trio of hosts some love. 🙂
Leon you need counciling
timbuck get a mac
Well I’ve done my bit, but they so far only have about 1% the number of votes as the leader. I think they’ll need to try and promote it in their next podcast.
However if anyone is good with photoshop and has some spare time I think a “Galatica needs you!” type poster with Tigh pointing his finger outwards may help with the recruitment drive(I know itd make me vote), a la Uncle Sam or lord Kitchener if your british, which I am.
I’m going to go see an oracle tonight.
Then I’m going to fly my Viper into a big huge hurricane and then show up 7 episodes later….
Wait a second, I think that’s been done. 🙁
Yeah car Galactica-ing is possibly the best/worst thing ever. It pumps me up but it probably makes my driving seventy five percent less safe for others because I’m picturing a scene or hearing the dialogue.
Timbuck- I have possibly the simplest method of carpodding which is getting the adapter that plugs into the cigarette feature and is kind of a mount for the IPod. Relatively inexpensive and painless.
Timbuck- They said it as good as I could. I got a thing that goes in my ciggy lighter that plays my iPod and charges it at the same time. I was a fool and bought some $10 crappy one off eBay so you might want to get a good one for a little more. I’m going to have to get a good one because I’m a bit of a hard charger and it wiggles loose when I turn, so I have one hand jamming that in and one on the steering wheel. Mad Cylon skills! Check the Apple online store and see what they have and search around (at stores or on eBay) to see what they officially support or recommend.
Also, according to The Futon Critic, David Eick’s “Bionic Woman” was an early pick up by NBC today. Genre shows are making a return this year after the successes of “Heroes”. Katee Sackhoff is going to be one of the leading ladies in that show, apparantly as an evil fembot (possibly two David Eick shows where she’s a robot gal). Also, Adam Baldwin (the man they call Jayne) had some show that got picked up as well. And speaking of Jayne, Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion in the real world) was on “The Late Late Show” and was awesome! So proud of the captain lol.
I really hope the Big 3 (no not the automakers, I mean Chuck, Sean, and Audra) don’t mind all this off topic business. I’m always the one to get us off topic, it seems, so I’ll take the full and total blame. Luckily others join in, so it’s kind of like speeding with a bunch of other people. “Anarchy! Anarchy! I don’t know what it means, but I love it!”
BTW, if someone knows where that quote is from, I will be a little less embarassed that I remembered that line lol.
stabbing wildy in the dark:
Talladega Nights: “I don’t know what that means, but I love it!”
Has anyone in here seen (read) this?:
http://ifmagazine.com/new.asp?article=4445
Geez, 13, you’ve been here long enough to know that this place thrives on off-topic.
BYC, I hadn’t seen that article. It does seem to confirm the rumors that have been floating around.
Baltar as evil? Definitely not, in my view. He’s an amoral narcissist, but that’s different from being evil. To be evil requires evil or malevolent intent — the Cylons are evil for purposely committing genocide, but they are not unrelievedly evil because they think they’re doing God’s work. I’d put Baltar out the airlock because he’s a dangerous, amoral person who’s already responsible for many deaths, but that doesn’t make him evil. RDM and crew wouldn’t paint any main character as “evil” because that would make the character uninteresting and cartoonish.
Oh, guys, I just came over here to post that article about what EJO said. Jamie Bamber said that’s what he had heard a few months ago, but now that Eddie said it, well it’s a done deal. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I’m happy that they’ll go out on their own terms and before the storylines get silly or anything (no “Black Market” craap!). But I’ll also be very sad to see it go. I’ll have that same feeling I got when I saw SW Ep III.
But hey, I guess it’s kind of works out since the SW live action show is scheduled to air in 2009. George, get off your butt and finish that storyline! I know some loathe the prequels, but I love it anyway. I consider Serenity/FF, BSG, and SW to be the trifecta of scifi goodness.
Oh yeah, Fuzzyelf, it was Talladega Nights! That kid was a riot and even funnier on the DVD extras.
Last off topic thing I’ll say here but 13th, i love that kid! “if it isn’t our mangy, transient grandfather!”
Man, I just read the “If” article. I have to say that it is bittersweet. The last thing I would want to have happen is for BSG to turn into the last two seasons of the X-Files. BUT, this has been one HELL of a show. I do hope that David Eick gets his show off the ground and it lasts longer than Minnear’s “Drive”. He has my support.
Heh, at school there was this really big dude on and he would always say “Chip, I’m gonna jump on you like a spider monkey”. It was really funny.
That was a lame story, I agree.
Could not agree with you more Browncoat_Bryan. Those last 2 seasons of X-Files spoiled that show for me. They had a great run until then.
A good show should know when to quit and deserves a good conclusion. I’m just sorry they could not give us 2 more seasons of the quality we had so far (yes, I loved season 3).
Martin K writes: “To be evil requires evil or malevolent intent — the Cylons are evil for purposely committing genocide, but they are not unrelievedly evil because they think they’re doing God’s work.”
I have to disagree, respectfully. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions” has become cliche because it is so true. To do evil does not require evil intent. Jim Jones thought he was doing God’s work, as did the medieval popes who declared the various crusades, as did… I’m sure you can add other examples. In some ways, those who think they are doing God’s work can commit the worst evils of all, since their actions are thus “justified” and above reproach.
I suppose I can grant that this doesn’t make the people themselves “unrelievedly evil,” but I don’t think good intentions totally remove all responsibility for committing evil.
I’m perfectly content if season 4 is the final one, myself. I think they will definitely go on out on top, with strong writing and strong acting, and we will not be in the position of having to lament, “Why is the show so stinky this season?” three or four years from now. We’ll never have to wonder, as some “Lost” fans reportedly are, if the show’s creative team really knows where they’re going — because they will have already gotten us there. And we’ll always have the DVDs! 🙂
The only thing I’m worried about is: What will happen to the Galactica watercooler once galactica finishes .
(yes that was shameless sucking up)
Maybe replies aren’t working for my laptop, so I’m doing this on the desktop. David Eick has said that they haven’t made a decision about whether or not season 4 would be the final one.
Watch the other ones I did last night all start popping up and I’ll be saying the same thing 3 times now. lol
Dr. P speaks for many, I’m sure, in saying: “The only thing I’m worried about is: What will happen to the Galactica watercooler once galactica finishes.”
Well, hopefully the blog would still be here, even if no new podcasts… but I think the caller on the last episode who suggested doing “Heroes” or some other show is onto something… 🙂 (No rest for the weary, eh, guys?)
