A “Real” Galactica Watercooler

As you heard in GWC Podcast #36, one astute listener caught the appearance of an actual Galactica watercooler during the "Cylon reveal" in the season finale.  Like you, we dove for the TiVo to see it for ourselves.  For those of you without a copy, another listener sent us a great screenshot of the moment.  (Thanks, Jeremiah!)

Some have written in suggesting that this item's appearance isn't an accident, but I personally can't believe that.  Regardless, it's good fun, and we got a big kick out of it.

    Haha! That’s glorious.

  2. Stephanie says:

I think you should interpret it as a wonderful compliment!

  3. WackoTTL says:

The final 4 are finally revealed and Galactica Watercooler was literally there to cover the story.

  4. Mike P says:

Maybe the watercooler is the fifth Cylon!

  5. Joe says:

I noticed that during the first airing! It makese sense since they are all standing in the workout room. Could it be Poland Springs? You can see the label was turned around away from the camera, haha!

  6. Mike D says:

If there were five of you, GWC, you could be the final five 🙂

  7. Pike says:

Mike P, I was thinking the same thing! That explains everything!

Who put the device in the CIC? The Watercooler! Who gave Papadama the note? The Watercooler! It’s been right under their noses the whole time!

  8. The 13th Cylon says:

    Ha ha! That’s awesome.

In all honesty, it wouldn’t surprise me too much if someone important in the show knew about GWC. The show was done filming before all the Rolling Stone/ Howard Stern fame and glory came about, but if you type “Galactica” in the iTunes store search, this pops up on the main page along with RDM’s, the show, etc. Only the Cylon god knows for sure. lol

Then again, maybe it’s a “Head Watercooler” that only we see.

  9. Armando says:

Heh-heh. Now we have THE Galactica Watercooler on screen. Awesome!

I wouldn’t put it past the BSG production staff to do this as a little shout out. RDM seems pretty in tune to the fan community and while he mostly lurks in the SciFi boards, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s at least aware of this forum. Like 13th Cylon pointed out, it’s on the main page at iTunes (I found you guys looking for RDM’s pod cast feed there). So, you never know.

  10. Pike says:

13th, you may be right. Nobody seems to be reacting to it…

I wouldn’t be suprised if the writers et al. were aware of GWC. I know that they follow the Battlestar Wiki, and some even contribute. I tend to think that this was coincidental, though.

  11. Steviespin says:

I first heard about this site on the Howard Stern Show so it is certainly spreading into pop culture awareness.

  12. The 13th Cylon says:

Yes, we’ll know it’s a head one when Baltar walks up to it and pulls the little lever to get water and suddenly realize it’s not there. Either that or we see him try to frak it in his lab.

  13. WackoTTL says:

My gods I pray that we NEVER find out the truth if thats what has to happen.

  14. BoxytheBoxed says:

go check the frak party i called that

  15. Pike says:

Great. Now I’ve got THAT picture going in my head. Thanks a lot.

  16. 13th Cylon says:

    You’re welcome. lol

  17. Dan, the Lord of Kobol says:

    LOL!@13th and Pike.

*Barry White music plays as Baltar looks at the watercooler longingly…*

And, well, I think you can imagine the rest of THAT sequence.

  18. Carol says:

I would absolutely take it as a subtle ‘thanks’ gesture to the GWC
    Three.

    Reason?

They’ve treated water as precious ever since the epsiode where it was
scarce. They still are, you common see one Adama or the other
drinking it out of fancy glassware and EJO said he did that deliberately
to help indicate how precious water is.

Why would they put a WATER cooler out, where anybody could just
guzzle as much as they wanted?? It has to be a Shout Out, imo.

Beautifully done. Take the pat on the back and enjoy it.

  19. StevieSpin says:

Can it be seen if there’s water inside the tank?

  20. Scottish Jamie says:

I think it is very possibly a shout-out to you guys.

It’s not unprecedented, Joss Wheedon/Mutant Enemy did a few shout out to fans of Angel during season 5. RDM & Co do seem really switched on to the online fan base so I choose to hold out some hope that this may be more than serendipity.

PS – RDM’s podcast and a Frak Party Q&A have finally been posted. This week is the final glut before the famine…

  21. Flyer Ken says:

That’s great now the real question did it have the cone shaped cups or the small ones you get at the doctors office.

  22. StevieSpin says:

I ask if it was filled because if it was empty it was likely a relic of a time when water flowed more freely, and a more logical set piece.

If it had water in it, it would make less sense in the reality of the show and more likely to be some sort of shout out, though truly I doubt they’d do that in a show where they take details so seriously.

    Still, fun to wonder 😛

    SS

  23. fuzzyelf says:

    awesome…i totally think it’s a shout-out, too

  24. 13th Cylon says:

Oh my goodness, back to Baltar and the watercooler. Okay, well just imagine the bottle getting all steamy and the water condensing! lmao!

  25. Stephanie says:

RDM’s got a podcast up on iTunes, finally. And he refers to being at a frak party in the title. I haven’t listened yet, but do ‘other’ podcasts use the name frak party, or just GWC? Hmmm…

  26. Stephanie says:

Oh never mind, I’m dumb. But the podcast is there, all the same.

  27. Eyeless says:

“Then again, maybe it’s a “Head Watercooler” that only we see. ”

    Best comment ever.

Anyway, this is seriously awesome. It looks so out of place I LOLed.

  28. The 13th Cylon says:

Hey, this is off topic a little bit, but some gal from the new Quentin Tarantino movie “Grindhouse” was just on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and she was talking about how she’s a new fan of BSG and how her brother claims that “every episode of Battlestar Galactica has already been done on Star Trek”. lol It was pretty neat. It’s crazy how often BSG is mentioned in pop culture now days from The Office (Katee Sackhoff has said that NBC-Universal wants to have her do a cameo, hopefully that’ll work out) to Veronica Mars and now on Conan. Whooo!

  29. Baltarfan72 says:

Is it possible to get a season 3 or even a series 1-3 comment/thread here?
I have SO many thoughts on this past season… and what is possible in the future of BSG, and I know I’m not alone.
If we could have a place to discuss theories and conspiracies that would be x amount of awesome.

Just watched season 2 -3.5 tonight and I have a huge new perspective now when I compare it to what happened in the end of s3.
It’s a lot of speculation residual from the old BSG series but I really think it all will tie in and I know I’d love to have a blog thread where I (and others) could discuss our thoughts and ideas on what’s to come next year (ugh, so long).

cheers on an amazing website btw.
and kudos to the howard stern show (of all places) for pointing me here where all these amazing BSG fans are.. honestly if he didnt publicize this website on his show i’d still be arguing with stargate fans on the pegasus galaxy website on why SciFi should continue bsg over sg1….

  30. The 13th Cylon says:

Baltarfan- You can put your theories in places such as the post for the last podcast (which was from Sunday, I think we might get one today as well). We’ve got plenty of time to discuss theories for the remaining year.

FYI via the SciFi Boards- A gal could get pregnant and have a baby during the span of the BSG offseason. That alone proves it is TOO LONG!

  31. BoxytheBoxed says:

13 the last 2 were great haha tori is gonna be pregnant by the time s4 starts
Baltar fan: boxy hates you jk but SG1 is better than BSG STARGATESTArGATE
Atlantis got me into BSG so ha

  32. Jeremiah says:

There are no coincidences on the Galactica, only clues and shout outs.

  33. BoxytheBoxed says:

nice SW refrence i got it
“there are no coincidences only the force”
now is the watercooler the upside or the downside?

  34. Audra says:

13th – The steamy watercooler – lol! Also – you’re not planning on having a baby, are you? (They have a plan. Well, the thirteenth one has a plan. TO repopulate the universe with clones!!)

Baltarfan – That’s a great compliment, glad to have you here!

Stephanie – I’m pretty sure Zack Exley is the one who came up with the “Frak Party” thing, and we initially started using it as a shout-out to him!

  35. Eyeless says:

I agree with Baltar fan – this site needs a thread for general discussion purposes.

  36. Timbuck says:

Maybe, assuming this is not the Head Watercooler, this one will sprout little R2-D2 legs and follow people around the ship. It would be useful in firefighting if the Cylons try more of those kamikaze attacks like in TOS.

  37. 13th Cylon says:

Audra- No babies for me any time soon. It would be an incredible feat to do so, as the Governator is the only guy to have done it so far (“Junior”).

  38. Scottish Jamie says:

Okay, not to over-analyse things but there are three taps on the head water-cooler…

What’s the third tap for? In case it has a busy day?

After 13th’s comment I’m thinking hot, cold and “Baltar’s”…

  39. BoxytheBoxed says:

I like the genral discussion thread

  40. Timbuck says:

I think they should leave this photo up on the website when you first log on!

  41. Timbuck says:

3 taps: human, skinjob and hylon.

  42. Stephanie says:

I second TImbick’s motion. Shame to let it get eventually buried as we go.

  43. 13th Cylon says:

The third one is for Tigh. He’d be all “Rahh, where’s my frakking water!?”

Oh wait. I forgot, Tigh doesn’t drink water. He drinks alcohol before, during, and after each meal. Which leads me to my next ponderment- what happened to the Ambrosia? I loved that stuff. A bright green alcohol. It seems like they started to run out after season 1.

Has anyone else listened to the RDM Frak Party ‘cast yet? It’s pretty high-larious. The part about him telling Michael Hogan he’s a Cylon and the impersonation had me rolling on the floor. Like I said, forget Caprica, Tigh’s gonna get his own spin-off show. All the other actors I can imagine being regular people and all away from the show, but I’ve always imagined him to really wear the uniform, have a flask in one hand, and talk like he does on the show. He’s the man… or machine. Either way, he’s a bad ass.
