Ken writes: “In the episodeThe Passage Baltar and Number 3 talk to the hybrid and receive something like a prophecy from her concerning the Eye of Jupiter. Whether this is a place or an artifact is not really clear, but the odd thing is the name Jupiter. Jupiter is the Roman name for the Greek god Zeus. The Colonials have always used Zeus (and other Greek names). Why does the hybrid say ‘Jupiter?’ Could this be the name of the Cylon God? Is that the connection between the Colonial and Cylon religions?”
Just thought I would note that Hera and Athena are the Greek names. Their Roman counterparts would be Juno and Minerva, respectively.
Are there any other instances of the use of the Roman versions of the Greek gods, or is this the only one?
The closed captioning said “Zeus” when the actor said “Jupiter”.
Arktis, there has been two. Laura referred to “Mars Day”, and the Pegasus was a “Mercury-class” battlestar (although the last could be a reference to quicksilver, and not Hermes.)
The instance of Mars is probably due to the fact that even to this day, Mars is far more widely known than Ares, who was more a god of bloodlust than war itself. So I’m thinking it’s a popularity thing.
Wikipedia is so nice.
Anyways, if something like that slipped in, then that makes the “Jumping Jupiter” theory less likely. That’s disappointing because it would make things more interesting if it were to be true.
The song was all american rejects, damn mtv. Sombody needs to make a video of D’anna showing baltar the 5 playing Who are you
I’m surprised that they would jump back and forth like that. Seems a little sloppy. Unless Zeus and Jupiter are aspects of the same divinity (ala the Christian trinity). I guess I would buy that one.
Either way, looks like my theory is shot since the humans definitely also use the name Jupiter to describe a god. Ooops.
