As far as poodcasts go, I have way too many in my RSS feed, and I find that I prefer to have them played in chronological order, I actually prepend all the podcasts with the date of release. Like so: 2012.02.13-ModernGeek-30.mp3 Because I have so many casts that I listen to, getting them in order by date keeps me (usually) only about a week or 2 behind.

Cheers

Unfortunately, the best time for Sci-Fi fans was probably late '80's to early 2000's.

Now, SyFy isn't as good anymore. There are not many Sci-fi shows in syndication. Plus, the biggest "sci-fi" craze is vampires. I could watch some of Buffy...but there's too much Twilight influence.

I miss X-Files, Star Treks series, Battlestar Galactica, even Dark Angel. It seems like there will be a Star Wars series. But, that is still a few years away.

We need more sci-fi set in space.

I recently visited an exhibition here in Melbourne, Australia and on show was a three foot replica of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 from the original series which looked absolutely stunning!! I also had the pleasure of visiting Star Trek The Experience in 2004 and was instantly struck by the large models of the NCC-1701 A and NCC-1701 D. And I am hoping to make it to the USA this year to visit Washington to see the the shooting model from the Original Series. My four favourits Enterprise ships would probably be the NCC-1701, NCC-1701 Refit/A, NCC-1701 E and I am a fan of the rebooted NCC-1701. I know there was some mixed feelings about it but I felt that the film makers did a wonderful job in honourig the Original Enterprise while putting a modern touch on it!

And yes in case you can't tell I am a Big Time Trekkie! So much so that me and a few mates recently had a heated debate (in public lol) about who was better, Picard or Kirk. I'm a Kirk man myself! :-)

When this project was first announced, I wondered how well it would ultimately fit together. A drastic change every fifteen seconds seemed like it would be too much. I was pleased to se that it works, oddly enough.

[...] I really like this guy’s style. According to his blog, his family had accumulated so many themed ornaments they had to raise a second full size tree in their home just to display them. This tree is all about modes of transport from both Star Wars and Star Trek and it’s a sight to behold. I can relate to the need for a themed tree. Somehow the tree that the roomies and I put up every year has accumulated a mass amount of antenna balls. Yep, we use them as ornaments and it’s fantastically fun. I’ll try to include pics of that next week. In the mean time, check out Shooter’s blog to see his masterpiece.
The space program is the survival of our species.

The complex web of life on our planet will live or die in the next 100 years based on whether we can get ourselves free of utter dependency on this single planatary source of absolutely everything we need to survive.

Of the slender thread that survival hangs on,
I have no doubt.

It is going to be a close race, but we will have the means to survive if we choose to do so. If we can stop our suicidal path towards infighting, hatred, and self destruction. We have it within ourselves to live. But we must choose to live and live as it we are worthy to do so.

I went back to simple a few years ago: got rid of cable, hooked up a new antenna with a coax cable, and got Tivo ($12/mo), since I am never home when my shows are on. I watch less TV and I have lost weight and gained muscle. I haven't missed a single moment of watching other people exercise (aka pro sports), the "what color should I paint my wall" channel, or the "what should I have for dinner" channel. And we all know there isn't much on SyFy these days. :)

In all, I dropped my monthly expenses about $125, and I haven't regretted anything.

I haven’t missed a single moment of watching other people exercise (aka pro sports), the “what color should I paint my wall” channel, or the “what should I have for dinner” channel. And we all know there isn’t much on SyFy these days.

In all, I dropped my monthly expenses about $125, and I haven’t regretted anything.

I actually worked with Dr. Chang in his lab in Costa Rica developing some aspects of the engine and the logistics of taking it up to the ISS. It was my thesis project for College. He really is an amazing man and this technology has the ability to change space travel as we know it!

I might have to pick this up too, the first time around my computer just could cope with it but not to the point of really enjoying it.

Now that I can pick it up now with a more modern computer, it should be fun

Lets just hope I don't get motion sickness (first happened when I was playing HL2. (hence why I like games like Batman - over the shoulder).

Loved Crysis when I first played it and fell in love with wandering the island and non-linear paths. Crysis 2 was a bit more linear in gameplay but had some amazing visuals of New York city and a more engaging story.

For those that have the pc version Crysis or Crysis Warhead there is a great total conversion mod based on the Mechwarrior universe.

*Shakes head at my slowness and moves on*

You might also want to check out Crysis Warhead. I don't know if that has been ported to Xbox yet, but it is basically a new camping along the same lines as Crysis. You play as Psycho, the british guy from the first game. In my opinion, it is a little shorter, and a little more fun.

Hells Yes!

I religiously played that game for several months after release. First run through I did my "kill absolutely" everything that get's in my way, Next, time out I tried to keep the body count low. Both were fun fun. The suit and the options you can use with it in your drive to win are really cool. The alien nest thing was vomit inducing in it's weirdness (in a good way). Great story line for a shooter/stealth game. Well worth my coins and time.

Really glad you liked it Sean! I had played it when it first came out on the PC and really loved it! I have been looking at getting Crysis 2 on the pc, but waiting for the price to drop a bit more first :D lol (plus i'm scared C2 might not run as well on my pc).

I just can't play fps games on the xbox near as good as i can the pc, or i'd be happy to hop in with you.

Either way, thanks for bringing the game back to my thoughts.

Yeah I see your point. I have yet to have children myself (although my wife and I are planning to sometime soon) I can see how it could be a time saver as well.

I would have some concerns with all of this tech and having children these days.
I'm not sure if many of the children and young adults I know even know how to "disconnect" (even for a little while).

I'd like to see a Modern Geek podcast with advice on how teach our kids to be responsible and safe while using all this tech. How to protect/monitor kids internet experience and when is a good age for a kid to get a cellphone, or texting capability. That sort of thing.

I feel your pain about the ever increasing expense of tech gadgets. BUT, I don't think I could go back to simpler times (ok, maybe I could - kicking & screaming!)

I love all the gadgets, always have. Some I could afford, others, not so much. They expand my world. And they are soooo much fun.

I suppose some people can get trapped into living a virtual life by using all of the communications technology available to them. However, for the traditional American family with children it would be difficult for that to happen. I'm so busy with family-member functions, events, games, and appointments that for me, the current crop of technology advancements are exactly what keeps me sane.Otherwise I would probably feel lonely and isolated most of the time.

In the spirit of full disclosure our cable bill was $190 until last month when I stopped some premium channels. Our bill is now $159/month which includes 4 DVRs & assorted programming tiers. The reasons for that really haven't changed even with whole-house DVR options available. This cable package is still cheaper for us plus we have a few other TVs scattered throughout the house on basic cable so satellite or U-verse isn't an option. We have 3 smartphones with unlimited data packages and three other lines through Verizon totalling $310/month. My landline phone and DSL is $92/month. And yes I'm looking at consolidated options now which is why some of you have started receiving a different e-mail address from me lately. We also carry Netflix and XBox Live but have recently divested ourselves of XM satellite radio in our vehicles. So I admit our expenses are above the average US household which is why I started thinking about this topic to begin with. Also, as for being trapped by providers, I would recommend a bi-annual look at various options just to make sure you aren't paying an outrageous amount more than you need to or aren't missing out on some expense saving capability.

I'm guessing you can also just listen to Modern Geek to see if there is anything you are missing. =)

I agree that we're paying more and getting more, but I also think you can get trapped into staying with providers. We've been with AT&T so long that HubAZ and I grandfathered in to $30 unlimited data for our iPhones. We can't afford to walk away from that, even though my workplace- inside the library of a high school campus- is an AT&T deadzone.

I saw our last cable bill- combined internet, cable TV (STARZ/HBO) and HubAZ's business phone/fax lines - is about $220 a month. That isn't including mobile phones ($25 for each SonAZ) or the land line (different provider). It's likely we're paying to much.

The cost of tech is not just in the price of the hardware and software, but in the price of time.

I'm the type of person that if I let myself buy into all this new tech I would have a complete virtual life, but not much of a real one.

I believe it is important to use this new technology responsibility as well.

While it's possible to talk on a cell, text, and surf the web 24/7 any place anytime these days... Should we? It seems like the tech is advancing faster that society's edicate for using it. Look at the incidents of people texting while driving or the idiot shouting on his cell at a resturant.

Spot on, Ethan. I happen to have this symbol, more commonly utilized as a representation of (hu)mankind's journey through life, tattooed on my right calf.

It was the first piece of ink I'd had done, in Boston, perhaps nine or ten years ago, and still one of my most dear. It's a constant reminder to me that as we turn, and reflect, sometimes pleased with the change, other times disheartened by our errors, we are always walking a path, and the destination is almost irrelevant.

Don't tell me I have to invest in yet ANOTHER show simply because they share my tattoos... =)

Throwing out a topic idea for Thursday... If you're not planning to covering it on the regular cast, we could talk about fall tv and what we're all looking forward to! I promise to come prepared. :)

A great write up and i admit, that i do prefer Dragon*Con over SDCC, but not by much :) My reasoning is one that you mentioned but didnt go much into - Cosplay.

Dragon*Con is the costumer's con. If you can imagine it, it's being cosplay'd at D*C. SDCC has some great stuff, and with so many more people there might be as many costumers, but you don't find them as easily. At D*C you can't go somewhere without seeing some awesome outfits. Also, some tracks at D*C are actually 24hrs, so there is ALWAYS a con event going on somewhere :)

I'd also like to mention, the Parade pic you have with the Dr Who lookalike is actually from a previous year, as that is my friend Ryan. Ryan is a great costumer and 501st member from Tennessee and has been in a coma for a few months now. If you noticed the signs being held around D*C with his face on there, it's something the DrWho costuming group was doing for him as he's normally always there.
