Wishes can come true. Remember back in podcast 229 when the GWC Crüe asked us to call in with what we would do with $300? I called in and said I would get an Xbox 360 because Shooter Jr was on his all the time and wouldn’t let me play. I remember Sean smacking me down pretty hard in podcast 230 when they played my call because I wasn’t doing it right with Xbox live accounts (Gee, thanks for the parental back-up there buddy). Do you also remember in my blog post “Passing On The Family Geek Card” when I mentioned I was woefully behind the times with modern console gaming? Well, about six months later and with a Cromload of hard work and savings behind me, I was able to scrape together enough cash to start my Xbox journey. For someone who last “gamed” on an Atari 2600 this is not as easy as it sounds. But in the end, I know it will be worth it.

I finished the storyline for Halo3 ODST this afternoon and to sum it up in two words – it rocked. I didn’t quite know what to expect and it took a level or two to get my bearings but in the end I think many will agree with me.
The first thing you must remember is; “You are not Master Chief, you are The Rookie.” And in the beginning, being the Rookie is kind of a bummer. Your jump is about half what the MC’s is and though the 7 foot tall Spartan can handle two weapons at once The Rookie cannot.

I don’t have a big ass projection system at home. I do have some good sized TV’s here and there but my siblings and I are getting older now and our eyesight doesn’t work out as well as it did when we were all eighteen. To combat this minor factor we strung my 360 up to a set of 2.1 computer speakers, grabbed my sister’s projector and cleared a spot on the dinning room wall for a little game time.
Well, to be exact we cleared a spot big enough for a 154 inch picture – my bro and I busted out the tape measure cuz we just HAD to know. [sniff] Bragging rights being what they are and all. Yeah, it was huge. No crazy screens, theater style seating or surround sound but we did have the biggest picture any of us had ever played Halo on and that’s what counts. We are hoping to do the same thing again tomorrow for some serious game time now that we know the setup works and how to rig it up.
Ahhh, a zero dollar solution to a non-existent problem… life is good.
What you’re seeing here is the result of Chuck spending about 10 minutes getting on top the pinwheel with a Mongoose on the Last Resort map in Halo 3.
We celebrated my brother’s birthday recently, and — not to give away too many wild secrets in the life of geeks — there was pizza and Halo 3 involved. (Shocking, I know.) We are often asked to play Halo live and join up with others, which is super sweet. The only trouble is that our style of playing breaks down after a little while into “I bet I can put this vehicle…” and the score is pretty useless after that.
What I can’t really put into this picture is Chuck pitching the handle bars of the Mongoose back and forth which makes the Master Chief dance like Pee-Wee Herman.
A fun time was had by all.

If you’re a Halo 3 player looking for some multi-player action, come join other GWCers tonight for a frakkin’ frag fest on XBox Live. It’s an informal meetup, so you don’t need to dress up — or make any special plans. Just look for any of your GWC friends and invite them into your game or join theirs. You’ll find gamertags listed in the posts and profiles on GWC’s Forum.
Officially the fragging runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. tonight, but feel free to come and go as you’re able and the mood strikes you. See you online!

Full disclosure: I’m a huge Halo fan. Though I’ve only recently begun to fully enjoy the FPS experience, Halo’s story was enough to pull me in from the beginning. The Halo story is epic, covering a huge volume of time and space. Spread over thousands of years and dozens of parsecs? As Jayne would say, “I’m in.”
The Halo Uprising comic series represents Marvel’s comic closing of the small story gap between Halo 2 and Halo 3. Written by Brian Michael Bendis — who’s responsible for an incredible volume of work from Ultimate Spiderman to Alias – Uprising will consist of four issues chronicling the covenant’s invasion of Earth and temporary capture of John 117, the Master Chief.
In this first issue we meet a yet-unnamed hotel concierge from Cleveland and Myras Tyle (a musician) who represent the human element of the story. Of course, we also get to see the ‘Chief brrrrrt and fshammm his way through a pile of Covenant forces — brilliant, artful interpretations of a situation any Halo player will instantly recognize.
Welcome
GWC is a community of friendly people who enjoy and participate in geekdom as a whole. We are young and old, female and male, writers and readers, teachers and students, philosophers and skeptics, Browncoats and Trekkies, outside continents and beyond countries -- and we have one thing in common: passionate, shameless enthusiasm.
We’re interested in TV shows, movies, comics, novels, gaming, science, and music. We’re interested in each other. We like to chat about just about any topic. We’ll listen and give informed feedback, and at the end of the day we think of GWC as a clubhouse for a (very large) group of friends.
