In what would normally be considered a “filler” episode, Eureka shows us why that moniker isn’t worthy: Friendly Fire takes a short break from major story arc to explore what the show’s recent changes mean to the characters, imbuing them with a depth and complexity we’ve come to expect. Also: Wil Wheaton finally gets the opportunity to play a non-douche, and he kills it, delivering an awesome performance bring both his inner geek and inner professional to bear. Awesome!

It’s dream time (in a shared sense), and we definitely spend some time analyzing Jo and Fargo’s experience as well as Carter’s au natural trip for coffee. We consider the glimpse this episode gives us into Allison and Stark’s motivations in terms of how they approach this potential solution to Kevin’s problems, both past and present. Audra grades the various actors’ Spanish accent (Stark gets a B+, Fargo, not so much). We talk about how becoming the leader of GD affects Allison — as well as her relationships with Stark and Carter. And we discuss some new Eureka news including air dates for Season 5 (April 16!) and a new project coming from Eureka’s creator.

#26: Duck, Duck, Goose

Is Carter’s IQ really 111? We suspect it’s significantly higher. And we definitely wonder what kind of place Eureka is if Zoe’s score of 157 falls in the 92% percentile; that’s in the 99.8th percentile of the general public. We also enjoy Eureka’s Chinese anti-satellite test name-check, get a big kick out of some classic Henry dialogue, and marvel at Eureka’s version of the Heathers.

#25: Games People Play

The introduction of Jack’s ex-wife Abby helps uncover a lot of backstory on Jack, Abby, and of course Zoe. We discuss Zoe and Carter’s incredible integration into the Eureka community and what might place Carter and her into a standoff, each waiting for the other to make the first move to say they want to be together. We love the active and writing nuances that make Jack’s immersive experience just a little bit different than reality. And most of all we relate to Jack’s fear of losing his family — both Zoe and Eureka. Also: We launch into a great discussion of the cyclical, entropic nature of society and how it relates to TV development and audience.

We talk relationships and passive aggression in terms of Jack’s history. We enjoy the building tension over Henry’s unresolved issues. And we get a big kick out of Fargo’s ever-increasing role in Eureka.

#22: Try, Try Again

We discuss the introduction of Larry as a unique B-character arch-nemesis and what that might have meant to Fargo’s character arc. And we make lots of bubble-full-of-pea jokes.

We note some key moments in Eureka long-term-arc continuity exposed in this episode as well as some killer character development. We get a big kick out of the Fargo/Seth slap fight — and the quite realistic Allison/Bevery showdown. We discuss the slick balance of humor established at this point in Eureka’s broadcast history (as exemplified by their clean incorporation of drug humor here). And we laugh it up at how S.A.R.A.H. doesn’t inhale.

#16: Primal
