No, not the Tennessee football team! A remake of the 1981 adventure-fantasy classic Clash of the Titans is underway! Director Louis Leterrier plans to bring the eternal trials of gods and men back to the big screen. In truth, you probably recall much more about the original’s special effects than the acting, but that’s for another blog.

The original version, as you might recall, featured stop-motion SFX creatures by one of the masters, Ray Harryhausen, as well as Laurence Olivier as Zeus and Harry Hamlin as Perseus. With a newly-crafted storyline that initially bore the name of writer Lawrence Kasdan (it’s been reworked by others since then), the gleaming robes of Zeus are filled this time by Liam Neeson (sans lightsaber, I’d imagine), and Perseussword and shield are now in the able hands of Sam Worthington. Ralph Fiennes slakes his thirst for just one more evil character as Hades, God of Hell, a character newly added for the remake.

There seems to be no shortage of talent affiliated with the project, and with modern CGI effects, plenty of visual wonders available. Warner Brothers is planning a March 2010 release date in the USA. Let’s hope they enjoy a bit more luck than MGM did with the release date of the original on June 12, 1981, the same night a quiet, unassuming little movie called Raiders of the Lost Ark debuted.
