From the monthly archives: June 2008

During the hiatus we’re delving into some other stories, and this week marks the beginning of our Star Wars podcast arc — and our re-watch of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Highlights: we discuss what the Trade Federation is, why Naboo is remotely important (and why you should care), see midi-chlorians as Star Wars’ glowing cylon backs, question Anakin’s “virgin birth,” note how the Jedi could’ve saved the galaxy for a few creds by buying Anakin’s mother out of slavery, decide it’s OK to say Natalie Portman is hot because she’s over 21 now (and that Anakin’s “are you an angel?” line totally works), hear part one of Sean’s Yoda rant, and compare pod racing to NASCAR (Tusken sugar-water/pot-shots at racers = Talladega beer/boobs).

We spend this ‘cast taking listener calls, wrapping up Revelations — with our usual diversions. Highlights: we discuss the ramifications of three’s “four cylons” in the fleet comment, talk “harbinger” definitions (and Starbuck’s role as such), discover that we weren’t alone in looking for the famous lady of liberty (“You blew it up! Damn you all to hell!”), begin the year-long analysis of the final scene, crack wise about the ”other” Cylon fleet’s sausage-fest, plus talk screened-off fat-boy dance floors for Chuck and pec-mounted microphones. Thanks for all the wonderful calls this week!

Jane Espenson, best known for her work on Buffy, Firefly and Angel has taken a producing and writing role in the fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica. In a recent interview with TV Squad she shared her thoughts and feelings on the last episode:

“When we screened this episode at Ron’s house, months ago, we all sat stunned, and then agreed it was perhaps the best the show had ever produced. And seeing it Wednesday and again Friday night with fans in attendance bore that out… every time the blue clouded planet was revealed, I could hear the inhales of hope, despite the lack of indication of any continents — and I knew we were about to break some hearts. But, I hope, they only broke like mine did.”

We witness the end of 2008 BSG. Highlights: we discuss Earth, draw some comparisons to the multiple-cycle nature of the Matrix, talk about Adama’s breakdown, love Lee’s take-charge decision making, wonder who’s really President, speculate on the final cylon, and look really hard for the Statue of Liberty on the desolate beach. Note: We recorded a bit early this week, so some of your calls came after we recorded — so we’re doing another Revelations ‘cast next week to fit them in.

It’s Friday night during Galactica season, which means new BSG and frak parties galore. Regardless of how you’re planning to watch, be sure to choose the correct frak party for your viewing time zone to avoid spoilers:

  • Here’s the party for those of you watching via SciFi’s “streaming preview.”
  • Here’s the party for everyone watching the show at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT tonight. The thread’s open, so feel free to get in the mood there (sans spoilers, of course).
  • And here’s the party for those of you out on the West coast catching the PT broadcast.

And, of course, you’ve still got a little bit to slip in a last-minute call under the wire for tonight’s podcast by calling us at 214-296-9229. See you on the parties tonight!

The week we take on the penultimate BSG 4.0 episode. Highlights: we discuss Baltar’s “confession” (and really detailed wound), debate how having a cylon wife might affect marriage vows (and subsequent verbal contracts), laud the restraint of cylon flight suit fashion designers, note Roslin’s slow and thorough walk to the Dark Side, question the requirement that cylons give up their immortality to earn trust (but recognize the war implications of unlimited re-spawns), discuss Elosha’s brief return to BSG, enjoy Three’s “psyche!” moment, analyze the 4.0 finale trailer, and wonder if there are any “chick centurions.”

Here’s the new weekly presidential approval poll. Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to last week’s BSG episode, which means you should be voting for your feelings regarding “Sine Qua Non.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Tom Zarek is handling the job as president?
