Here’s the new weekly presidential approval poll. Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to the current BSG episode, which means you should be voting for your feelings regarding “He Who Believeth In Me.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?

  • Approve: 40% (56 votes)
  • Disapprove: 50% (70 votes)
  • Unsure: 10% (14 votes)

Total Votes: 140

Note: This poll has closed. Watch for the new poll to open up immediately following tonight’s SciFi broadcast of the next episode.

After the ever-risk-taking Cartoon Network broadcast the first eleven minutes of an unfinished (read: low-res, no sound effects, and full of mistakes) season three episode April 1st as a ‘fools day prank, series creator Jackson Publick was kind enough to post some details to his blog — including the premiere date: June 1st.

Other details include the fact that he (and co-conspirators Doc Hammer, James Urbaniak, and Michael Sinterniklaas) will attend a Venture Bros. panel at the upcoming New York Comicon. The panel starts at 4 p.m. April 19th, and they suggest that they may con other luminaries into attending as well. He’s also pretty sure that the whole crew will attend the San Diego Comicon as well.

For more fun, including Publick’s take on the April 1st broadcast as well as some still from season three, check out his LiveJournal post (below).

Like to meet some of your fellow GWCers and hang with the GWC crew? In the Dallas area or near enough to drive? We’ll be at the Irish Rover pub in Frisco, TX at 8 p.m. CT tomorrow night, kickin’ back, havin’ a few brews, and talkin’ all things Galactica. And science fiction. And fantasy. And comics. You get the idea.

For more information, check out this thread in the GWC forum.

Later this year Fantasy Flight Games will take Galactica from the small screen to the table, creating a board game around the show’s “rich story lines and compelling characters.” The game will feature “cooperative play” and “both political and military conflicts.” Another twist: one or more of the players could be human-appearing Cylons.

As SF Universe notes, a BSG collectible card game released earlier didn’t catch on and is now discontinued. Let’s hope the board game fares better!

As you can see from this GQ photo, the lovely and talented Grace Park, Tricia Helfer, and Katee Sackhoff can make absolutely anything look good — and remind us that female roles in science fiction have come a long way, baby.

Even GQ recognizes that viewers who succumb to their Y-chromosome and tune in will find “one of the savviest, most subversive shows on TV.” Between pseudo-geek dungeon master quips, they go on to say that “no other show combines intellectual heft with pure viewing pleasure quite like this.”

ComicMix just fired off a Q&A with BSG co-executive producer Mark Verheiden. And while thankfully Verheiden doesn’t dish any spoilers, his “A”s to ComicMix’s “Q”s point speculative fans in some interesting directions. For example, when asked why Six can sense the final five while Athena can’t, Verheiden responded:

“It’s important to look back at where we’ve been. Remember that Anders, Tigh, Tory, and Tyrol only realized they were Cylons when they reached the area of space seen at the end of Crossroads, Part 2.”

In response to many fans’ concern regarding Baltar’s “harem,” he reminds us that “Gaius was President of the Colonies for a while, duly elected over Roslin. There was clearly a groundswell of support for him then, and there’s no reason all those supporters would have abandoned him overnight.” He also notes that Lee’s abrupt reconciliation with his father makes more sense when considered in light of the elder Adama’s vote to acquit Baltar.

But GWCers who noted in the forum that in Tigh’s vision he shot Adama in the same eye that he’s missing will be happy about this response from series writer and Friend of GWC David Weddle:

“I was waiting for someone to pick up on that telling detail. Congratulations. But I am disappointed you have not figured out its significance within the larger mythology of the show. It’s all laid out for you. All you have to do is run the episode over again in slow motion, and the deeper truth will be revealed.”

Click here to join GWCers who I’m sure will be doing just that. I’ll be in the media room with the TiVo. In the meantime, don’t miss the rest of this informative interview over at ComicMix.

BSG Interview: Mark Verheiden [ComicMix]

BSG supervising producer — and Friend of GWC — David Weddle interviewed with SyFy Portal today, offering some insight into how Starbuck’s now-famous mandala rose from apartment art to major plot point. In short: Weddle and partner Bradley Thompson picked up on it when re-screening Valley of Darkness during research for Rapture. They then decided to add it to the temple in Eye of Jupiter and “build it into her backstory” in Maelstrom.

Though Weddle says “nothing is nailed down until the final episode is written, shot, and edited,” readers hoping for an complex Cylon “plan” need not worry. In the interview Weddle also cites Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as paving the way for BSG’s large story arcs and dark nature.

Will they reach Earth, SyFy Portal asks? “You already know the answer to these questions. It’s all right there,” Weddle says. “Just examine every episode closely and the truth will emerge. Or break out a magnifying glass and go over that Last Supper photo one more time. Ron Moore laid it all out for you.”

It appears Jewel Saite was right: Firefly will arrive in a new box set soon — on BluRay. And if the rest of her land-down-under panel comments prove true, we’ll see some new commentary to go with the additional resolution.

post-penikett.jpg

Tamoh Penikett recently spoke to Regina’s Leader-Post, offering some insights into Helo — and himself. Highlights:

  • Like so many fans, Penikett loves Helo’s “deeply rooted moral core” and says that “it’s easy to find his voice in the lines.”
  • Of the show’s decision to keep him on after his originally-planned departure following the mini-series: “It’s a huge compliment. I’m so fortunate to have been given that chance. The writers really enjoyed it, too. Ron saw it as a way to take us off the Battlestar and see things from another perspective.”
  • On BSG’s propensity to kill off characters suddenly: “I was a lot more nervous about that in the first season. I’d leaf through the scripts just to my parts to find out if I’d been offed.”
  • Penikett said he was a big Star Wars fan as a child, “but I love to read science fiction, authors like Phillip K. Dick. William Gibson is one of my favorites.”
  • On EJO: “I remember going to see Blade Runner as a kid and out of all the great actors in that, guess who had me asking my dad: ‘Who is that?’ Edward James Olmos. Coming on set for Battlestar the first time I didn’t know who was starring in the show and I showed up, saw Edward and Mary and was like, “Why are they here?’ and a friend said, ‘They’re the leads,’ and I couldn’t believe it.”

Penikett fans can also rejoice in the fact that he’s landed a role on Joss Whedon’s new show Dollhouse where he plays an FBI agent.

According to Multichannel News, BSG’s season four premiere opened to strong Nielsen numbers, including ranking first among adults ages 25 to 54, which Multichannel claims is the SciFi Network’s target audience. Other bits of interest:

  • The show “delivered a 1.6 household rating in the 10 p.m. hour April 4, translating into 2.1 million viewers.”
  • “The installment also marked Battlestar’s best live + same day showing in persons 18 to 49 in more than two years.”

Compare Friday night’s 2.1 million viewers to the average 1.9 million viewers who tuned in for the second half of the third season, and it’s pretty clear that BSG excitement is still alive and well — even after a one year hiatus.

Jewel Saite seems to have dropped a bit of a bombshell at a convention in Melbourne, Australia the weekend before last, suggesting that we may see a re-release of Firefly “a special edition in a box set.” She mentions being asked to swing by Los Angeles to participate in a new commentary. See for yourself in the video above.

Would I buy it? Hell, yes. I’d jump at the chance. But I’d run — not walk — to the store for a direct-to-DVD Serenity follow up. Wouldn’t you?
