The rumor’s been floating around that Tron 2 is in the works for some time, but now a 2011 release date is showing up in Disney docs. Scifi Scanner reports that the sequel will consist entirely of 3D work, and io9 chimes in with a director: Joseph Kosinski, whom IMDB lists as directing a 2010 Logan’s Run big-screen update. (Please tell me it’ll include Scarlett Johanssen running in tight white.)

We’ve had a chance to witness the Tron world in 3D already via the Tron 2.0 (pictured/review). But even though current 360/PS3 rendering capabilities totally smoke the original, it’ll be a joy to see what the latest and greatest can do with a killer story. As you can imagine, we’ll be watching closely for more details.

We normally avoid current political topics here, but I couldn’t help but notice everyone’s favorite time-traveling schoolteacher (Mary Steenburgen) having a brewski with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in a CNN Video today. Regardless of how you feel about Clinton (or politics in general), it’s nice to see that Ms. Steenburgen has aged well.

You might recognize that other guy, too.

PS: Please don’t let me know how much you love or hate Clinton. Please. Pretty please with Inara (or Mal/Apollo for the rest of you) on top?

Here’s the new weekly presidential approval poll. Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to the current GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 316: “Dirty Hands.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?

  • Approve: 34% (11 votes)
  • Disapprove: 66% (21 votes)
  • Unsure: 0% (0 votes)

Total Votes: 32

OK, I blew it. I forgot to post the poll for last week, so here it is a little late. Remember — even if you voted in the last poll, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to last week’s GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 315: “A Day In The Life.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?

  • Approve: 67% (14 votes)
  • Disapprove: 33% (7 votes)
  • Unsure: 0% (0 votes)

Total Votes: 21

We’re busy re-watchin’ away at GWC. If you’d like to jump in, here’s what we’re currently checking out and discussing:

Dirty Hands offers up not only “My Triumphs, My Mistakes,” but also a piece of prime evidence wielded by Roslin-is-the-final-Cylon fans. Ariel gives us our first look at the “core worlds.” And we begin a back-burner re-watch of Heroes, finally giving me the opportunity to discuss the series with the great GWC community — yep, I was late to the show. My bad.

Look for a bonus ‘cast on Real Genius later this week. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, now’s a great time!

We take a little break this week to allow the re-watches to catch up with us. In between Chuck’s extended anti-Geek-stereotype rant, Sean brings us up to speed on Farscape and Akira, we listen to Chuck defend Nemesis and Asimov (again), discuss sci-fi’s important place in literature, question whether the moon is female, disagree on whether or not the Hitchhiker’s Guide is juvenile lit, compare and contrast Trillians, pick our favorite Lwaxana Troy moment, and pick on Audra about Tracey Gold’s lack of Star Trek appearances.

Think you’re the only one who watched the new Iron Man trailer at least thirty times? Check out this awesome second-by-second analysis by MTV scribes Shawn Adler and Larry Carroll. From the music to the minute details, they pick up damn near anything there is to see in the two-minute thrill ride, setting it the context of the magnetic marvel’s 30+ year history in pulp.

News broke recently that Iron Man baddie (pictured from the recent trailer) and long-time TV actor Faran Tahir will play a yet-unnamed Starfleet captain in Trek XI. Trek-friendly blogs are already touting rumors that he’ll play a “strong” captain, contrasting him to “weaker” red-shirt captains like “Ferris Bueller, you’re my hero” captain John Harriman, Scotty-rube captain Styles, and “Let’s be sure to report that back to Starfleet command” captain J.T. Esteban.

But far and away the most fun piece of this news is a quote TrekMovie.com pulled out of Trek co-writer and producer Roberto Orci:

“Being a captain in Starfleet should be a special position, and we don’t feel that another captain has to be diminished in order to elevate Captain Kirk. If you are a captain in Starfleet, you are a cool motherf&#$er.”

That you are.

The kind folks over at ComicMix Radio talk a bit with Richard Hatch, whom they say brings his “privilege of seeing the inside of the spaceship Battlestar Galactica across three decades” to bear on where the show’s been and where it’s going. I haven’t yet had a chance to check it out, but it’s on my “listen” list for this week.

If the fact that Hiro Nakamura wears one isn’t enough to make you drool for this watch like I do, there’s a practical side as well: its high-res face can display the time in 37 cities — perfect for anyone planning to blink from Tokyo to Times Square instantly. Of course, you’ll have probably have to set it manually after a jaunt to feudal Japan.

Even the uninitiated will appreciate Nixon’s skate and snowboard cred, and you’re unlikely to run into anyone else wearing one — unless I find a spare $150 in the near future. I know it’s over-priced, but I’m a bona-fide watch fiend. This one’s totally on my list.

As he promised when he joined GWC back in April 2007 (podcast #41), Galactica composer and friend-of-GWC Bear McCreary has set a date for a live performance of BSG music in LA: April 13, 2008 at the Roxy nightclub. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster. From Bear’s blog:

“This year’s show will eclipse the 2006 event in every way. We’ll have a larger band, playing music from all four seasons of Battlestar Galactica, more taikos, more strings, and more soloists in the group. We’re also producing an all-new video presentation/documentary which will premiere at the concert.”

He also mentions that he’ll be joined by “some very special guests,” which others have interpreted to mean that BSG cast will emcee the show.

Personally, I think whoever made this — the poster claims it’s not his — deserves internet immortality far more than the Star Wars Kid. This is comedy genius.
