We’re busy re-watchin’ away at GWC. If you’d like to jump in, here’s what we’re currently checking out and discussing:
A Day In The Life delivers some great Adama family backstory, and includes some incredible bonding moments between the Admiral and his son. Out of Gas — listed by many GWCers as their favorite ‘Fly episode — shows us just how Kaylee (and others, of course) join the crew. And Real Genius reminds us how cool it is to be a geek.
Long-time listener Emily reminds us why Helo’s a good guy — and why he has issues — and we check in on this week’s official re-watches: A Day In The Life and Out of Gas. Highlights: we wonder what it’d be like to be the Ford Prefect of Firefly, discuss chess in Red Dwarf, reminisce about Chuck’s introduction to Buffy and X-Files (and re-introduction to Robotech), wax poetic about KSC’s The Boy From Mars (and its strange Universal Soldier connection), hear Sean recant his DC aversion, listen as Audra ranks sci-fi/comic actors by fullness of their lips, add additional ammo to the discussion on green vs. blue aliens, remember the Scholastic Book Fair (and our young selves reading Asimov, Heinlein, L’Engle and others) while recalling last weekend’s trip to the used bookstore, and fawn over our sad, midwestern chance meetings with fame. We also announce a new re-watch movie: Real Genius.

Join us in re-living one of every geek’s favorite flicks: Real Genius. Besides generating quotes heard ’round the community — “It is God!” — providing one of Val Kilmer’s greatest roles, and forever cementing a strange connection between Tears for Fears and laser-heated popcorn, this movie is just plain fun.
If you get a chance, swing by the GWC Forum and tell us about your favorite Real Genius moments or give us a call at 214-296-9229 for inclusion in our coming-soon bonus podcast.

Wonder no longer how Tigh lost his Eye. It’s all Aaron Doral’s fault! The clip above is from a deleted scene included on the Battlestar Galactica season three DVD set, and is available for free viewing on the DVD launch website.
While I’m glad this remained on the cutting room floor — it’s a bit cheesy, and the mystery of Tigh’s experience added a lot to the creepiness factor of the whole ordeal — I’m also glad to know that yes, the loss of his eye was every bit as terrifying as I’d imagined.
(Thanks, Kappa!)

Ajinbayo “Siku” Akinsuku is receiving a lot of press lately for his interpretation of the Bible in Japanise manga form. But there’s nothing like hearing about the project from its creator. If you’ve got a minute — thirteen minutes, actually — check out NPR’s interview with Siku himself.

The awesome folks over at Rebelscum.com have posted a photo round-up of their NYC Toy Fair 2008 coverage — over 3,000 photos of just about anything at all that’d interest a GWCer at the fair. This is definitely browseworthy material.
Plus, they get extra points for registering one of the coolest domain names ever, yeah?

The “Merc with a mouth” now has live action face: Ryan Reynolds is set to play Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I’m not saying I don’t have faith in Ryan — and I’ve seen from other pics that the dude is ripped — but can he bring the necessary personality to pull off Deadpool?
I’m doubtful. I could be wrong, of course. In fact, I hope I’m wrong. I hope Ryan puts on the red-and-black then proceeds to put out his cigarette in someone’s eye and steal 007’s girl on the way to the set to start filming.
That would allay my fears a great deal.
Apologies if you’ve already seen this since it’s made the rounds, but who doesn’t have a minute-and-a-half to hear a New Hope summary from a sweet little three-year-old?
My favorite bits: She points out that “the shiny guy always worries,” “Obi wants Luke to learn to use the light-up sword,” and most importantly, “Don’t talk back to Darth Vader, he’ll getcha.”

This year represents the 30th anniversary of Star Wars in Japan, and after all those decades, Celebration has finally reached the island. The three-day event will commence July 19th at the Makuhari-Messe Convention Center near Tokyo. There’s currently no word on star appearances, but if you’d like to attend, more information is available at the official site.

It seems Stargate: Atlantis’ Dr. Carson Beckett (a.k.a. Paul McGillion) won’t play Scotty in the upcoming Star Trek XI, but he will make an appearance. He told Trekmovie.com:
“As you know, I have signed pages of confidentiality clauses. I can say that I had a scene with Kirk and that was pretty cool. And I am not a ‘red shirt,’ so there you go. I was around for about a week.”
Check out the rest of the interview for more details, and some information about upcoming ‘Gate.

As much as we’d love to show you these beautiful (and informative) maps of almost all the Star Trek universe thus described, they’re totally copyrighted by Pocket Books. How do we know this? Whomever is responsible for these dutifully scanned that page, too, and made it available with the maps.
If you get in to check these out before they’re taken down, don’t miss my favorite: The Dominion. It’s marked with the routes and events of numerous DS9 episodes.

Numerous blogs are reporting that every GWCers favorite Viper-head Aaron Douglas has joined the cast of the upcoming remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Keeanu Reeves will play the unlucky Klaatu, with Jennifer Connelly taking on the role of Helen. IMDB cites a rumor that John Cleese will play the pivotal Dr. Barnhardt, and suggests that Kathy Bates might be attached to the project as well.
Regardless, here’s hoping that Mr. Douglas gets the big-screen time he richly deserves.

GWC is a community of friendly people who enjoy and participate in geekdom as a whole. We are young and old, female and male, writers and readers, teachers and students, philosophers and skeptics, Browncoats and Trekkies, outside continents and beyond countries -- and we have one thing in common: passionate, shameless enthusiasm.
We’re interested in TV shows, movies, comics, novels, gaming, science, and music. We’re interested in each other. We like to chat about just about any topic. We’ll listen and give informed feedback, and at the end of the day we think of GWC as a clubhouse for a (very large) group of friends.
