chuck-trans.gifIt’s week twenty-seven of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season 2.5 episode “Sacrifice.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

Note: Though a lot of the frak party will likely take place in the GWC Forum – click [here] to enter and join the fun — we’re going to leave comments open here as well as some listeners and readers have asked us to do so. Enjoy!

Here’s the new weekly presidential approval poll. Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to the current GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 216: “Sacrifice.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?

  • Approve: 73% (30 votes)
  • Disapprove: 22% (9 votes)
  • Unsure: 5% (2 votes)

Total Votes: 41

Besides getting down on this week’s re-watch episode Scar, we also spend a bit of time on last week’s Halo 3 release and the forum’s re-watch of Buckaroo Banzai. Highlights: We discuss BSG’s focus on the military and how Romo Lampkin is one of the few strong (non-government) civilian characters in the series, hate on Kat’s bad attitude, love on one of the best Starbuck moments in the series (and some great Viper action), note that the Master Chief likes big butts and he can not lie (no other Spartans can deny), toss out our favorite John Bigboote quotes, condemn Zur as a hoser (though the Kodan Armada is cool), bow to Audra’s knowledge of Latin, and bitch about the nerfing of the Wile E. Coyote.

And for those who’re debating whether or not to jump in, you may recall that earlier this spring, GWCers voted Scar “The Hottest ‘other’ character in BSG” by a landslide. Woot!

This week’s BSG rewatch brought Black Market, reviled by most fans who label it a “filler.” We actually like it — kinda. We also launched GWC’s new forum and store this week, and spent a bit of the podcast bringing GWC’s standard punch. Highlights: we note the shortest command in BSG history (Fisk’s, which is announced in the “previously” tag and doesn’t last through the credits), discuss Lee’s reasons for offing the mob boss and paying for love, consider Lee’s failed attempt to intimidate Baltar, remember that we’re getting ready to enter the “Helo Era” where he fills every rank and role on Galactica, bring up a tiny bit of Final Fantasy (“You don’t see many ‘Crappy Story VII’ games, man.”), learn that Audra’s not into short guys and that Sean’s weakness is Trinity pleather, hear Audra’s stock MST3K comment for Star Trek’s too-clean caves, wax poetic about action figures and fire, (mis)quote Abraham Lincoln, and talk about bare-midriffed stormtroopers. BTW: Don’t miss our group re-watch of Buckaroo Banzai over on the forum.

chuck-trans.gifWe mentioned the possibility of a ‘Banzai re-watch last week, and Sean and I have decided to go for it this upcoming week. (He’s bringing his awesome, cheap-ass, used-book-store-scored copy over and we’re watching together.)

If you’d like to join us, you’re welcome. I’ve started a thread over on the forum for everyone to hang out and discuss the movie. And if you’re too busy this week, don’t worry. I’ll keep the thread open and we can continue the discussion as long as anyone wants to participate.

And if you’re still looking for a DVD copy, we advise first checking your local used book/video shop. If you don’t find it there, Amazon is currently offering it for $10.

chuck-trans.gifAs I’ve said in the podcast, creating the forum was a tough decision for us. We’ve seen where forums can sometimes lead — both good and bad. That’s why we were very reluctant to change the formula we accidentally stumbled upon that enabled all of you to find GWC and enjoy yourselves here.

But the kick-ass meetups going on in Philly, NY, and Dallas, and the incredible discussions and friendships that’ve formed in comments finally pounded through our thick skulls the idea that the community has outgrown the blog’s meager interactive tools.  So, we put in a hard few weeks to try and upgrade GWC’s infrastructure to support all the great work you’ve done building such a quality community.

And for those of you who missed it in last week’s podcast, let us reiterate in print: the only thing more important to us than Battlestar Galactica is you. Participating in the GWC community is an important part of our lives, as are all the friends we’ve made via the ‘cast. The GWC podcast, blog, and forum aren’t going away, regardless of the short (or long) future of BSG.

That said, we’d like to offer a few notes about the forum and how it interacts with the blog:

First, we’re going to leave comments open on the blog for all but podcasts and frak parties. With the release of the next podcast and frak party this weekend, we’ll turn off comments for those posts and instead add a link to the appropriate thread in the forum.

Podcast threads will appear in the GWC Podcasts fourm, and frak parties will appear in the GWC Online Events forum. We called it “online events” instead of “frak parties” since we envision adding additional re-watch, group reads, and so on there as they come up. In fact, keep an eye out soon for the Buckaroo Banzai re-watch you heard about last week.

If you have ideas for official events — or for future podcast guests or discussion topics and so on — we’ve created a News/Suggestions forum for that purpose. You can start threads at will in this forum, so we can all participate in sussing out things the community will enjoy. We’ll then create online events, blog posts, and even mention them in the podcast as they take off.

We also created a “Meetups” forum to serve as ground zero for planning your own GWC get togethers. We’ll add your meetups to the official GWC calendar — now contained in the forum! — so everyone can find you and attend, and we’ve even got some neat stuff to help you plan your event. Look for more on that soon.

The forum features a few general discussion areas, including one specifically targeted toward BSG. But don’t worry: we know that discussions here on GWC sometimes head off in other directions, so there are forums for other sci-fi talk and even an “off-topic/other” forum to catch all the rest.

Finally, there’s a Forum, Blog, and Podcast Issues forum for technical discussions of problems you find with the GWC infrastructure. We’ve done our best to get it all working and to make it all available to everyone, but we’ve probably missed something. Let us know in this forum, and we’ll correct it or help you out. Or maybe you’ll help us out. Either way, things’ll be better for it.

The blog will remain available, and we hope you’ll check it from time to time — or maybe grab an RSS feed to stay current — as with the advent of the forum, it’ll take on a more active role in keeping everyone aware of all the cool stuff going on in terms of meetups, BSG news, GWC news, and of course, Audra’s sweet top-ten lists.

One last thing: the store is open as well. As we mention plainly in the store itself, it’s not intended as a big money-maker. If every one of you bought a T-shirt, we probably wouldn’t cover hosting costs because we’ve set the markups extremely low. In most cases, Cafe Press will make 90%+ of whatever you’re paying for the items.

The point of the store is to give you a chance to grab some gear that you (or we) couldn’t otherwise have — gear that hopefully represents some of the fun inside jokes that we in the GWC community share. And if you have suggestions for additional gear that you’d like to see, drop a post in the Suggestions forum. When Sean has time, I’m sure he’ll oblige if possible.

Enjoy!

chuck-trans.gifIt’s week twenty-five of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season 2.5  episodes “Black Market.”  So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party?  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free.  We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

See you here all week!

Happy 1st birthday, GWC!  And we’d like to especially extend these birthday greetings to all of you who’ve stuck around and made GWC what it is through your calls and messages.  This week we take a moment to talk about the recent upgrades to the website and blog, but — most importantly — get down to some serious talk about Epiphanies.  Highlights: we discuss Roslin’s unpopular choice to abort the Hylon, marvel at how the Colonial peace movement is headed by a Cylon, consider Baltar’s interactions with head-Six and Gina as evidence for and against head-Six’s physical presence, and take one of our favorite calls this year in which a caller describes Tigh as the Dr. Cox of BSG.  Don’t miss the late-cast discussion of why comic books rule (and why the crew’s going to re-watch Buckaroo Bonzai sometime soon).

chuck-trans.gifThis morning we added another feature to GWC: a Flickr photo pool. This is an easy way for us — and you! — to share your GWC-related photos. We kicked things off by adding a few of our own. Specifically, I uploaded a shot of me and Audra with someone everyone here’ll recognize (Sean’s behind the camera), and Sean added some killer pictures from our visit to the Star Wars exhibit in Fort Worth a while back.

But the best thing about the Flickr pool is that you can join and add your photos as well. If you’ve never worked with Flickr before, it’s easy — and more importantly, free. Just jaunt over to their website and sign up for a free account. Once you’re set, you can upload your photos using any of their simple methods. Then you can join the “Galactica Watercooler” group and add any of your uploaded photos to the group.

Keep an eye out in GWC’s right sidebar for a Flickr photostream that’ll show ten of the most recent additions to the pool. (Because the group is brand-spankin’-new, right now it just shows my one photo. But that’ll change shortly.)  Clicking on any of the photos links you to the big versions, and clicking the “more photos” link takes you to the pool itself.
Anyway, we hope you enjoy it, and look forward to seeing your photos!
