capt-audra.jpgGalactica Watercooler listeners have a new presence on Facebook, thanks to our pal Steve Lunny up in NYC! If you get a chance, come by and say hello – everyone is welcome! It’s also a great way to contact other GWC-ers and even see the faces behind the names (unless you’re like me and just stick with Sean’s kickin’ avatar design).

To find the group, log into Facebook and search for “Galactica Watercooler Galactigeeks United.” Thanks to Steve and the first dozen members who are getting the ball rolling. Hope to see you there!

comander-chuck.jpgIt’s week twenty of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season two episode “Final Cut.”  So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party?  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free.  We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

See you here all week!

Here’s the new weekly presidental approval poll.  Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week.  Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to the current GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 208: “Final Cut.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?

  • Approve: 77% (33 votes)
  • Disapprove: 16% (7 votes)
  • Unsure: 7% (3 votes)

Total votes: 43

Home rocks!  Between BSG’s closest approach to the holodeck and Athena’s first “test,” this episode resonates even more in the rewatch.  Highlights: we talk constellations, explore Athena’s motives, mention how much we miss Elosha, welcome Helo back to the fleet, and punch like never before.  Yep, it was a long week, and we enjoyed getting back to BSG and the GWC sci-fi funhouse.  Enjoy.

capt-audra.jpgAs you may know, I moonlight as a teacher when I’m not bustin’ Cylon(z), and one area of teaching I enjoy immensely is African American/Black studies. It’s a delicate and wonderful thing to have civil conversations among diverse groups of people about the things that make us different – and to what extent they play a part in our lives.

That said, this is not a reckless comment, but rather a careful observation and a request for polite discourse on the subject: how are non-white characters portrayed in BSG? (We could say it doesn’t matter, since BSG is an alternate and fictional universe, but we must concede that all art comes from a real context, and the audience for the show lives in that same world context.)

A website reporting on discussion at the recent ComiCon in San Diego mentioned the following:

“Another member of the audience applauded the racial diversity but commented on the seeming play to the stereotype of the ‘spiritual negro.’ The leader of Gemenon, a planet well known for following the verse, is an older black woman. Moore admits that they weren’t aware of it until later and that it was an unfortunate oversight in casting, given how careful they usually are about this. Specifically, it’s important for them to not show prejudice and fear of Other through race, gender, or any other human characteristic. That’s why they have a woman president, the best pilot is a woman, and there are representatives of all races scattered throughout the show. The idea of racism – the issue of self vs. the Other – needed to be played with through the human vs. Cylon didactic. With the issue of the ‘spiritual negro,’ the creators had wanted a more spiritual world, picked Gemenon, cast an actress, and when they looked at it later, they realized that it had happened. It’s true that she was the right actress for the role, but they only realized in retrospect how it could also be taken.”

I admit I wondered myself early on in the show if there wasn’t a hint of unwitting stereotyping here, since a number of black or African-descended characters seem to be religious leaders (like Elosha) or hail from the religious colony of Gemenon (including Cpl. Venner, who smuggles chamalla into the brig for Roslin, and Sarah Porter, the Quorum of Twelve representative of Gemenon). However, I don’t see anything wrong with casting whomever they like for the roles, and it can be noted that these three characters are portrayed as quite moral. With the exception of Dee, though, it does seem that other significant black characters get quickly shuffled offstage – Simon the Cylon doctor, Sue-Shaun the Pyramid player, Bulldog. I doubt this is intentional, but it’s always worthwhile, IMHO, to think about it anyway.

For what it’s worth, one sci-fi fan recently told RDM face-to-face at the Nebula Awards that she thought the show needed more black characters, and he responded by saying, “That’s a fair criticism.”

My theory has long been that BSG transcends ethnic and gender barriers in a way few shows have dared, and the egalitarian spirit that pervades the show is welcomed by its audience. I suspect, though, in some cases, that ethnic, gender, and other issues such as this will come up, and we should be sensitive to them. (Note: “sensitive” is different from “PC”; “sensitive” means thoughtful and decent about it, as opposed to obligingly inoffensive.)

Maybe the creators of BSG should consider casting more people of color if they want to reflect a universe more like our own. That said, the show demonstrates a thoughtfulness and integrity on these issues that I’d be glad to see more of, in the Sci-Fi world and in ours.

comander-chuck.jpgSince we decided to push our “big questions” podcast back closer to the Razor release, we spent some of our time in the last podcast instead discussing some of the “small questions.”  We took a stab at answering them in the ‘cast, but truthfully your answers are as good as ours.

If you have a minute, feel free to share your answers — or give us craaaap about ours — in comments here.

The questions:

  • If you could have any ship in the fleet for your very own, which one would you choose?
  • If you had a choice, which ship in the fleet would you live on?
  • What job would you like to have in the fleet?
  • Who would you actually (honestly) be in the show — as opposed to who you’d like to be?
  • Which character would you want with you if you were stuck on a planet?
  • Would you have a “relationship” with Starbuck or Baltar?
  • What’s the BSG equivalent of a “red shirt?”
  • If you had to “box” one of the characters, which would you choose?

I can’t wait to hear your answers.

comander-chuck.jpgIt’s week nineteen of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season two episodes “Home, Pt. 1 & 2.”  So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party?  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free.  We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

Here’s our late (but delivered as promised) latest ‘cast.  Highlights: We discuss The Farm in all its creepiness, finally table the ship business, make good on last week’s quarter bets (with Pike’s help), and, having postponed our “big questions” ‘cast until closer to the Razor release on some good advice from listeners, ask some “small” questions instead — like who you’d actually be if you were in the Colonial fleet and which BSG ship you’d own if you could have any one you wanted.  Sean’s answer: a Cylon heavy raider.  Why?  Because it’s “like a Centurian you can ride in.”  Who can argue with that logic?

capt-audra.jpgThanks to Stevearino and his wife; Nick; and Gray (who drove all the way from Houston) for coming out to the GWC meetup Saturday night! We reveled in jokes, pop culture references, beer, and Indian food (hey, the “Irish” make a good tikka) and peeled off our GWC masks to reveal our true selves – Centurions! And, after Gray left, we actually did talk Galactica. (Sorry, GMDB*.) Anyway, we had a great time and hope to hear more from even more meeter-uppers from around the colonies.

*GMDB is Gray’s new nickname, as she kicks the collective asses of both Audra and IMDB in terms of TV and movie knowledge.

comander-chuck.jpgSince I we (sorry, Goose) had a lot to do this weekend, we weren’t able to record tonight. Rest assured, though, that we’re not abandoning you. We’ve all set aside time to record tomorrow night, and you’ll get the podcast late tomorrow night. Or maybe early Tuesday morning depending on whether I’m in the mood for beer or coffee tomorrow. It could go either way.

In the meantime, here are a few things you might enjoy:

  • Apparently Belgian archaeologists who were digging around in a Roman bath uncovered a “huge, exquisitely-carved statue of the Roman emperor Hadrian last week. Though Wikipedians will always remember Hadrian as “one of the ‘five good emperors’” and the guy responsible for Hadrian’s wall, Hadrian’s gate, and (you guessed it) Hadrian’s Villa, OGs will always remember, um, her, as the power-hungry woman who went too far/was misunderstood by all.
  • Those of us who suck and didn’t make Comicon — that’s right, you know who you we are — missed out on a Futurama 2008 trailer. Thankfully Gizmodo was there to rub it in our faces let us in on the action. One day GWC will have a travel budget, and after we visit the Philly Crue (assume there are dots there — I’m way too lazy to look up the code) we’ll get to see great stuff like this.
  • Comicon Part Deux: The debate is officially over. He’s small “e” evil. Now if Flickr could just end the ship debate for us…

And in case you were wondering, the Dallas meetup was a blast. In fact, we’re talking about doing it again sometime next month.  Enjoy, and we’ll see you tomorrow night. Or Tuesday morning.
