No More BSG On iTunes?
According to a New York Times article today, NBC Universal will not renew its iTunes contract with Apple, meaning that unless things change between now and then, Battlestar Galactica will disappear from iTunes as of January 1, 2008.
As the ‘Times says, “The decision by NBC Universal highlights the escalating tension between Apple and media companies, which are unhappy that Apple will not give them more control over the pricing of songs and videos that are sold on iTunes.”
We know that when Razor is released we’ll get to see the back story of how Cain dealt with the attacks on the colonies. It’s been suggested she may not have always been the ice queen we came to know and love/hate.
Here’re the top ten reasons she got that way:
10. She was gonna be an actress. She was gonna be a star. She was gonna shake her ass on the hood of Whitesnake’s car. Then she got drafted.
9. Her college nickname: “Magic Carpet Ride.” She’d show them when she was in charge.
8. Lost a bet in grade school: Either Tommy Davison asks you out, or you become an all-powerful misanthropic dictator who terrorizes the last crumbling remnants of the human race.
7. Tired of her older brothers claiming she “fought like a girl.”
6. Had a fling with President Adar’s predecessor, Wally, and loved the taste of raw power.
5. Did a teaching stint in public junior high for three years before joining up.
4. Knew Paula Abdul was thinking of her when she writhed around, singing “Cold Hearted Snake.”
3. Always thought Cain was the cooler brother.
2. Thought women should rise to the top by kicking, rather than sitting on, men’s laps.
1. Out to shake off those damn Ro groupies once and for all!
It’s week twenty-two of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season two episode “Pegasus.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…
Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.
See you here all week!
Here’s the new weekly presidental approval poll. Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!
Remember: This approval poll applies to the current GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 210: “Pegasus.”
Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?
- Approve: 77% (43 votes)
- Disapprove: 16% (9 votes)
- Unsure: 7% (4 votes)

After a brief jaunt through some off-topic fun — an explanation of why we don’t have an 800 number, our favorite Fresh Prince episodes, Sean’s Poison-capable haircut, and Run-DMC Adidas — we land on a sort-of-on-topic visit to the Fort Worth Museum of Science’s Star Wars exhibit (way cool). Incredibly, we do get around to discussing one of our favorite episodes, too: Flight of the Phoenix. Highlights: We discuss Mary McDonnell’s special look when they unveil the Blackbird, enjoy Gaeta’s big-ball moment, love on the Chief’s screw-you-guys-I’ll-do-it-myself, wonder why Jammer doesn’t have a real name, hate on prequels, and again mention Chuck’s hero, Buckaroo Banzai.

Here’s the stuff they don’t want us to see – the stuff that landed on the cutting room floor.Â
10. Starbuck is really the love child of Brother Cavil and the Hybrid.
9. Lucy Lawless’ sidekick from Xena: Warrior Princess shows up to do a love scene with Baltar. Gets boxed.
8. Gaeta’s tattoo…goes all the way down!
7. The secret love tryst among Doral, Leoben, and a Daggit.
6. Tigh wore his eye patch on the wrong side for the first two days of filming, so they just left it in.
5. Adama and Roslin hooked up way before Season One.
4. Lee admits to Dee he’s been seeing Tory on the side. And Seelix. And Racetrack. And Laura Roslin.
3. The Algae Pot Pies in Hangar Deck B gain consciousness and form their own labor union.
2. Admiral Cain is a Centurion.
1. Baltar discovers that Six is real, and he’s the one who’s imaginary.
Hey all, several people have expressed interest in a New York City-area meetup, possibly for a screening of Razor in November. If you are going to be in the area, have any suggestions, or want to jump in on the planning, now’s your chance!
We’ll continue to keep this post on the main page of GWC as long as needed.
The (in)famous Timbuck dropped me an email today indicating he, Mike P., and Raemani are organizing a third Philly-area meetup. They’d love to meet any of you from the NY, NJ, or DE area, and are willing to plan the meet to catch as many of you as possible. If you’re interested, the “Philly Three” will be hanging around in comments here to organize.
Sadly, AA Net Fares doesn’t have a cheapie flight to the northeast this week. One day, though…
Update: (Bump!) There’s still a lot discussion going on here and the meetup hasn’t finalized, so feel free to jump in if you’re in the Northeast and want to participate.
Update: (Bump!) Looks like they’re setting a date.

Is it just us, or does Final Cut seem more like a “filler episode” the second time ’round? Highlights: We close the book on “penultimate” and the ship, let on how we MST3K the episodes when we watch together, relate an opening-night Star Trek story, dish on our favorite Halloween costume ideas, and gush about how much we love next week’s episode.

We got kind of a late start recording tonight, but the podcast is in post-production right now and should be out on the site right around midnight. By the way, we were a bit tired and, well, beat down from a really long week when we recorded tonight’s podcast, so forgive us if we’re a bit slow. It happens to everyone, and this week it was us.
In the meantime, a few news items of interest:
- The Space Shuttle Endeavour has undocked from the ISS and is still on schedule for a landing Tuesday.  The first opportunity would bring them down at KSC at 12:32 p.m. ET, so give it a watch if you get a chance. It’s not as exciting as vipers and raptors, but it’s, well, real. (If you’re at home, DirecTV offers the NASA channel. If you’re stuck at work — or without satellite/cable — you can watch a free streaming feed here.)
- As many have discussed in comments, Sci-Fi announced their fall schedule. We now know that we’ll indeed see a series of two-to-three-minute-long “mini-sodes” broadcast during the new Flash Gordon, which now occupies BSG’s old 9 p.m. Friday night slot. We also know that Razor will air November 24th. Woot!
- And finally, we’re in the process of making some changes to the galacticawatercooler.com site, and plan to release them in the next few weeks. As always, we’re doing this over nights and weekends, so we’re not sure exactly what day we’ll finish. But it’s exciting stuff that we think will make the time you spend here even more enjoyable.
See you in a few with the ‘cast.
Welcome
GWC is a community of friendly people who enjoy and participate in geekdom as a whole. We are young and old, female and male, writers and readers, teachers and students, philosophers and skeptics, Browncoats and Trekkies, outside continents and beyond countries -- and we have one thing in common: passionate, shameless enthusiasm.
We’re interested in TV shows, movies, comics, novels, gaming, science, and music. We’re interested in each other. We like to chat about just about any topic. We’ll listen and give informed feedback, and at the end of the day we think of GWC as a clubhouse for a (very large) group of friends.
