Like a lot of you, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about what Ron Moore’s recent blog post (“The Sopranos Ends Perfectly”) might mean in terms of BSG’s season four wrapup. Unlinke most of you, I’ve never seen a single episode of the Sopranos — I know, shame on me — so I’ve eseentially been sitting alone in a cold, dark room, figuratively speaking, scared that I’ll be mad as hell come 2008.
Then my friend Joe over at Wired shot me a link to this blog post by (in)famous Jeopardy player and CSI writer Bob Harris in which he offers what’s widely recognized as the most complete analysis of the penultimate TV mob moment, and I’m far less worried. Why? The title of Bob’s post is “Tony Soprano didn’t just get whacked; he practically got a funeral.”
Bob’s analysis is stunning.  He draws on everything from religion, art, and music to color theory and cinematography to determine the series’ technically-open ending.  I say “technically” because after reading Bob’s post, it seems to me that David Chase gave Sopranos fans plenty of information to determine Tony’s fate. Yet by not actually showing the ending he left fans the option of, as Ron said, “pretending that life continues.”
Considering all the email we’ve received regarding what will become of BSG fandom when it slides over the edge into a post-BSG abyss, I’m beginning to think that a “closed” ending would offer me less comfort as opposed to more. I’d like to pretend that life in the BSG universe continues in some meaningful way, as opposed to, say, a final blissful settlement on Earth.Â
But I’m still concerned a bit: in his post, Ron speaks of David’s “brilliance” in terms of the open ending, not once mentioning David’s myriad clues-for-the-freeze-frame-enabled-anal. In my mind at least, a “brilliant” ending for BSG would include both almost-but-not-quite definitive clues and an “open” ending. Bob’s work reminds me very much of the effort that our readers and listeners here at GWC put into understanding BSG. I could easily see us all having a discussion along the lines of Bob’s in our post-422 podcast comments.
But without the clues it’d just be, well, an “open ending.”Â
Of course, it’s important to note that Ron’s post is dated June 11th — very shortly after the airing of the episode. As you can see from Bob’s post, locating and interpreting these clues takes time, so maybe Ron felt the brilliance, but didn’t discover the clues until later — like most Sopranos fans.
IÂ can hope.
Update: Pike points out that I’m slow, and he got there first. Pike rocks.
As I mentioned at the end of Podcast #49, we’re going to do something a little special with #50. But since I was tired — and maybe a bit incoherent — I thought I’d add this post to make things a bit more clear about exactly what we’re doing.
First of all, you’re going to get three GWC podcasts this weekend. You’re going to get one-each commentaries for each part of Kobol’s Last Gleaming. (In fact, we’re inagurating our new custom-built audio desk and much-more-organized technical setup with these podcasts. Woot!) These will be “Podcasts #51 and #52,” however.
Podcast #50 will be a “bonus” ‘cast targeted specifically at all of you hardcore GWC-ers — the ones who’ve made this so much fun that it’s become a part of our life, the ones who bust our chops (and educate us) when we drop the ball, the ones who’ve helped us through good times and bad. You know who you are.
We’re cooking up some other fun stuff, but for starters, we’ve got an audio “blooper reel.” Calling in will be much easier once you hear three full minutes of me frakking up the intro with full-on heckling from the crew.
But the most important part of #50 is you. You’re what makes this awesome, and we want to feature you. So if you have a minute, we’d like you to give us a call at +1 214 296 9229 and tell us about how another GWC listener/reader helped you enjoy BSG more. Try to keep your call to around 30 seconds so we can include a lot of ‘em.
For example, I’m going to spend my 30 seconds on LVogt, who recently inspired me to delve a lot deeper into the whole Hadrian/”Witch Hunt” situation than ever before. If it wasn’t for reading LVogt’s comment, I’d probably have glossed over it, and I’d have missed out big time. I’m willing to bet that most of you have had a similar experience — so let us hear about it!
And in case we haven’t said so recently, thanks so much for making GWC a joy.
Holy Frak! It’s week thirteen of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the penultimate season one episodes “Kobol’s Last Gleaming, Part 1 and Part 2.” (Note: We’re combining them into a single week. Think of it as a GWC doubleheader.) So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…
Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.
See you here all week!
Here’s the new weekly presidental approval poll. Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week. Let your opinion be heard (for free)!
Remember: This approval poll applies to the current GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 112-113: “Kobol’s Last Gleaming.”
Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?
- Approve: 65% (24 votes)
- Disapprove: 30% (11 votes)
- Unsure: 5% (2 votes)
Total Votes: 37
Colonial Day, well, rocks! Besides a pretty significant analysis of the current re-watch episode, we take a ton of listener calls. Highlights: we wonder why Lee gets his ass kicked (while busted-knee Starbuck takes care of business just fine), lament poor Helo’s discovery of the obvious (finally!) when he sees a duplicate Boomer, demonstrate end-of-week amnesia as we forget Majel Barrett’s name (but remember her life story and many roles), touch again on Ron Moore’s Sopranos blog entry and the larger question of artists’ responsibility to their audience, discuss the Cylons’ lack of “creation,” and listen to a caller’s poker night experiences with Mark Sheppard. Oh yeah, and Audra brings up the “cleavage jacket” again, muttering something about “Boobarella.”

What an awesome episode this week’s re-watch schedule brought us! We gush about Hand of God and take some more listener calls. Highlights: we talk about Hand of God’s incredible viper action, discuss Starbuck’s personal growth, compare Pythia to Revelations (and wonder why Roslin doesn’t know more about it), call Caprica the “Coruscant” of BSG (and Aerelon BSG’s “Tatooine”), mourn Chuckles’ death, love on this episode’s sweet scoring, admire the accuracy and depth of Lee and Adama’s father/son “moment,” wonder what kind of beer they’re drinking in the celebration, and consider the goal of the “head faction.”

Since we at GWC have taken the opportunities recently to pine over our favorite stuff from back-then, from action figures to TV shows, we’d like to hear your own stories about how you got acquainted with BSG. In Podcast #47, Chuck remembered running around a gymnasium as a little kid with a toy Cylon raider. And I admitted I wasn’t alive yet at that point, so my intro to BSG came, well, about three years ago.
Did you watch the original series (first run or re-runs)? Did you own any of the action figures? Ever have a crush on Dirk Benedict? Time to let down that tough BSG-fan exterior and come clean about your first time – with BSG, that is.
Listener Timbuck writes: “Philly-area GWC fans: There’s a mini-meetup this Saturday for the screening of ‘Serenity’ at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute in the Philly suburbs. Looks like myself, Raemani, and Mike P will be there. It’d be great to meet others from the area!”
Feel free to use the comment section of this post to get in touch or lay out details. And if you haven’t yet seen “Serenity” — shame! — you should; it’s a great flick and a fitting end to the much-too-short Firefly series. Audra and I were lucky enough to see one of the pre-release showings with some good friends (whom we actually met via Firefly) and a theater chock-full of hardcore fans. What a great time!
If you’re in the Dallas area, Audra, Sean, and I are hosting a mini-meetup sometime in the next month. We’re working out the details here. And there’s a slight possibility we may be in the Las Vegas area in the next month or so as well. We’ll post as time gets closer.
Audra, Sean, and I are planning to host a small GWC meetup in the Dallas area sometime in the next few months. We originally asked about your interest in a meetup here, but since there’s a good bit of interest I thought I’d create a post so we could work out the details in comments.
We’ll keep an eye out here, and when the meetup comes together we’ll be sure to collect some audio while we’re there for a future podcast!
It’s week eleven of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season one episode “Hand of God.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…
Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

Welcome
GWC is a community of friendly people who enjoy and participate in geekdom as a whole. We are young and old, female and male, writers and readers, teachers and students, philosophers and skeptics, Browncoats and Trekkies, outside continents and beyond countries -- and we have one thing in common: passionate, shameless enthusiasm.
We’re interested in TV shows, movies, comics, novels, gaming, science, and music. We’re interested in each other. We like to chat about just about any topic. We’ll listen and give informed feedback, and at the end of the day we think of GWC as a clubhouse for a (very large) group of friends.
