As you’ll hear in GWC Podcast #41, Sean and I — getting a little punchy toward the end of the ‘cast — laid down a quarter bet on the following question which we hope you’ll answer for us:

Who’s “cooler?”

  • Darth Vader: 59% (197 votes)
  • Gaius Baltar: 41% (135 votes)

Total Votes: 332

Sure, this is likely to land us the same kind of press as the one-off “Galactica vs. Enterprise” comment got us, but hey — we were tired, it was the end of the week, and a bet is a bet.

To be fair to Sean, I’ll post my own arguments in comments where he can do the same.

Note: This poll is closed — and I frackin’ lost.  But thanks for all your participation in settling the issue!

comander-chuck.jpgIt’s week five of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season one episode “Act of Contrition.”  So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party?  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free.  We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

See you here all week!

Here’s the new weekly presidental approval poll.  Remember — even if you voted last week, you’ll want to vote again on this poll as this is a weekly feature and the results will vary from week to week.  Let your opinion be heard (for free)!

Remember: This approval poll applies to the current GWC re-watch schedule, which means you should be voting for your feelings circa Episode 104: “Act of Contrition.”

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Laura Roslin is handling her job as president?

  • Approve: 78% (60 votes)
  • Disapprove: 16% (12 votes)
  • Unsure: 6% (5 votes)

Total Votes: 77

Note: This poll is closed, but you can vote in the current pole!

This week we’re joined by every BSG fan’s favorite composer Bear McCreary who takes some time out of his busy schedule to answer our star-struck questions and give us some insight into his history and the music that makes Galactica so enjoyable.  Highlights: Mr. McCreary explains the scoring process and clues us in on what’ll surely be the BSG event of the summer — a live performance co-inciding with the season three soundtrack release, we respond to listener Armondo’s comments regarding music careers, the discussion of Baltar’s evil nature continues, we again question Athena’s true allegience, and we get more than a little punchy as we wrap up this week’s re-watch.  Next week: Act of Contrition and lots more listener calls and comments.

comander-chuck.jpgIt’s week four of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season one episode “Bastille Day.”  So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party?  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free.  We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

This week felt like “The Baltar Show” — or maybe “Everybody Loves Gaius” — as we take some new listener calls and run down the current re-watch.  Highlights: we discuss how soundtracks affect our lives, question Baltar’s intentions versus his actions in terms of his “evil” nature, speculate further on Baltar’s cult of women, consider variations on the “we’re all Cylons” theory-of-everything, and talk about how much we miss “moral compass” Lee as he was in this week’s re-watch episode, “Bastille Day.”

I haven’t started the re-watch and to be truthful have not done any re-watches yet.  Saying that, I can not think of a single time one of the Cylons intentionally lied to a human.  That’s not to say they have not misled anyone, but I can not remember any actual untruth in the scripting of the Cylons.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but it might add something as you go through the re-watch of the seasons.

Regarding Cylons’ truthfulness, I think the scene that is most in question is Leoben telling Roslin that “Adama’s a Cylon.” I think it was Sean who pointed out that Cylons may not outright lie, but say things that are what people need to hear at the moment (or what will further their own agenda). Personally, I think that either Leoben was lying in that case – or we’ll find out something like, say, humans and Cylons share common heritage and thus all humans are Cylons, or some other technicality.

And what about this? Check out the following excerpts of dialogue between Simon and Starbuck in ”The Farm”:

Starbuck: Who brought me in?

Simon: A big Guy called Anders. Used to be a pro pyramid player if you can believe that.

Starbuck: Yeah, I know him. Where is he?

Simon: He died….on the table. I thought he was only slightly wounded. Turns out that a piece of shrapnel had nicked his aorta. Massive internal bleeding. I’m sorry. We did everything we could do.

(new excerpt)
Starbuck: Are you a Cylon?

Simon: What do you think?

Starbuck: I think you didn’t answer the question.

Simon: I am most definitely not a Cylon. Of course I don’t know what you would expect me to say. If I was a Cylon I certainly wouldn’t admit it.

So, there’s a chance Simon wasn’t lying about Anders, if we assume that Anders is a resurrectable Cylon and resurrected instead of died on Caprica. But denying he’s a Cylon is definitely a lie. (Remember Aaron Doral in the miniseries – “I’m not a frakkin’ Cylon!”)

comander-chuck.jpgIt’s week three of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and it’s time to move on to the season one episode “Water.”  So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party?  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Surprise!  Though it wasn’t on the list, we decided to go ahead and try another “commentary-style” podcast for this week’s re-watch episode, “Water.”  We also stick around after the show to discuss the Mini-Series and “33,” plus we take a few more listener calls.  Highlights: we gain insight into Cylon “sleeper agents” through watching Boomer struggle with her true nature, enjoy some early-BSG personal moments such as Adama offering fatherly advice to his son and Roslin counseling a distressed pilot, note how Roslin is already learning to “play politics,” discover (through callers) a few things to watch out for in the rest of the re-watch, and play our first “Cylon drinking game” with Audra.

mc-sean2.jpgWhile veiwing the rewatch with everyone, I witnessed a scene in “33″ where Athena shoots Six in the back and then drags Helo off with her into the forest.

The first time I saw this episode I didn’t think much of this act - just that Athena was trying to defy her fellow Cylons and save poor Helo from a fate worse than death. Looking back now it seems very rehearsed. Athena was supposed to defend Helo against Six. This acts as a bond between them and gets Helo digging Sharon.

Looking forward we know that Helo and Sharon have the first Hylon child. If this outcome was foretold by the Cylon “plan” then I take my hat off to its complete ability to navigate the unexpected and somewhat round-about manner in which events unfold.

This is some excellent planning to be sure. From the second episode to the present - over three years - Athena is a truly huge fulcrum of the story. She has had so many different events happen to and around her that we might forget that she and her child have been a big chunk of “the plan” the whole time. The Cylon have tried to pair Sharon off with both the Chief and Helo, leading me to think that her child is more important than current screen time might suggest.
