mc-sean2.jpgFelix Gaeta is one of the most under-the-radar characters on the show. He doesn’t get the girl, he doesn’t get the Racetrack reveals of glory, and he doesn’t have many friends. Felix just tries to do the best he can and, more often than not, gets hosed for it.

Gaeta is like one of those people you see pictures of on the news. You know – the ones that always have 3 names, like Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth. They interview his neighbors and people who knew him and they say that he was always quiet and never caused any trouble with anyone. That’s Gaeta.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Gaeta a great deal. He has shown wonderful growth and could become a good strong character. But before he gets there he is gonna have to get off the “skulking in the shadows killer” train. I have to admit I was a bit shocked at his violence towards Gaius but somehow marveled at a guy who has done a complete 180.

Earlier in the show’s history Gaeta found the conspiracy against Baltar and brought it to light. Then A.N.C. (After New Caprica) he stabs him in the neck with a pen while trying to interrogate him. Something has obviously snapped in his brain - we just don’t know what yet.

I’m guessing that Felix looks ahead and sees Baltar getting his trial and getting let off or escaping punishment that he deserves and wanted to make sure that Baltar would not be spinning his stories and weaseling out of anything else. Though I don’t think anything will happen to him for it. Heck, Cally shot Boomer in front of 20 witnesses and just had to have some quiet time before all was forgiven. Maybe Felix figured he didn’t have a lot to worry about.

“Taking a Break…” offered no respite from the multiplicity of personal issues cluttering the minds of Galactica’s finest this week.  Highlights: We discuss the crew’s marital strife, ponder Baltar’s somewhat dim future, and debate whether Laura “The Airlock” Roslin still deserves her nickname.  It looks like the staff at BSG will take a break next week, but we’ll be here to give you your weekly fix with another listener special.  Don’t forget to call in your comments, speculations, and questions at 214-296-9229!

comander-chuck.jpgPer your request, here’s a post for pre-podcast discussion of tonight’s new episode, “Taking a Break…”  If you’re not already attending — or hosting! — a Frak Party, join us here for the GWC online ‘party.  Or hell, even if you’re watching with friends, post their comments, too!  There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks.

We’ll give this a check before we start the podcast after the show tonight, too.

comander-chuck.jpgAt this year’s O’Reilly  Foo Camp, a few enterprising artists were offered the opportunity to create some, um, unique art that would likely appear later in space shots from Google Earth and possibly other such utilities.

They created some Space Invaders characters from large white blocks, but the item above will likely be of more interest to you.

According to the participant who posted these pictures, we should look for more information later in the year.  Man, I hope it made it into Google Earth’s database.  It’d be a fun trick to show your friends.

After weeks of waiting, I guess we all wanted to see world-changing reveals in The Rapture.  Though they didn’t come (yet), we did receive some enticing clues as to what’s coming.  Highlights: We run down what we can logically learn from Three’s “vision” of the final five, speculate about Baltar’s fate, express surprise over Three’s early boxing, wonder when we’ll see more Callie and little Nick, and joke about where else Starbuck might be hiding tattoos — and how they might affect the fate of mankind.

We’re rounding out the last of our over-the-break ‘casts with a truly special set of guests: our listeners!  We’re joined by a number of regular listeners and blog commenters who lead us down some interesting paths.  Highlights: We review the practicality of Cylon genocide, wonder what might happen if Galactica arrived at Earth sometime in our past, talk BSG as political sounding board, speculate on which of Starbuck’s parents might be the abusive one, consider a couple of caller-suggested Cylon reveals, and (sort of) answer the toughest question of the night: Galactica vs. Enterprise — who’d win?

capt-audra.jpgAll right, gang – tomorrow we’re recording the special call-in podcast where we play your phone comments on the air and discuss the issues YOU bring up.

So now’s your chance! Get your voice heard and your ideas aired. The site here is always brimming with thoughtful, intelligent comments – now we want to hear you voice them.

(If you’re worried about your secret identity being revealed, you can always pretend to be someone else. If you’re reluctant to hear your own voice played back – well, it’s time for you to know the truth.)

We’re looking forward to hearing all your great ideas, so call our Cy-line at (214) 296-9229.

capt-audra.jpgThere’s been speculation in the comments about Katee Sackhoff leaving BSG, and I would just go insane if they got rid of Starbuck. I’ve been musing on past episodes where we’ve gotten clues about why she is “special” – mostly involving Leoben and torture – but I’m always left wondering how it adds up. We never really got full closure on her mysterious “Farm” scars, what kind of abusive past she had, or why she continues to sabotage her relationships with other people. I’m still not sure if there’s a special religious significance to her retrieving the Arrow of Apollo.

Maybe this is completely out there, but in trying to guess how the BSG writers will go with the next season, I’ve come up with a few bizarre hypotheses: What if Kara Thrace is Hera/Isis? This would have to involve some sort of circular time or time travel, but it would definitely make her “special.” Even if she wasn’t the exact same person, if Kara was a Hylon, it might explain why the Cylons seem to know things about her childhood (unless Leoben really is a seer).

Further speculation: we’ve guessed before that Starbuck may have had an abusive mother. If Starbuck had mixed parents – say, a human mother and a Cylon father, perhaps the mother rejected her as the Hylon baby and hence Starbuck’s mother issues…

Either way, I hope Katee Sackhoff sticks around because, even as a messed-up version of herself, Starbuck still kicks ASS.

comander-chuck.jpgYou were already Time’s person of the year, now you’re guesting on GWC — looks like it’s a good time to be you!

Kidding aside, we’d like to give you the opportunity to join us directly for the last GWC podcast before season 3.5.  All you need to do to join us is give us a call at (214) 296-9229.  (Regular listeners will recognize this as our normal comment line.)  It’s a voicemail number, so just follow the instructions to leave us a message.  If everything goes well, we’ll compile them (along with our own commentary) into this week’s podcast.  And hey, if everyone’s too busy to call this week, we’ll figure something else out.

Note: I know some of you podcast as well, so if you’d like to send us higher-quality audio, drop me a line and we’ll see if we can’t work it out.

Have a good week, and we look forward to hearing from some of the regular commenters here on the blog.  (You know who you are!)  We love reading your comments, so it’ll be fun to put a voice with a name.

This week we’re joined by science fiction author Tony Daniel, who was kind enough to stop by the studio in person.  Those of you who’ve been jonesin’ for some straight Galactica talk in the off-season will love this ‘cast, guaranteed.  Highlights: We talk downloading (a major theme in Tony’s novels Metaplanetary and Superluminal), and speculate, speculate, speculate.  We predict who’ll die, who’ll be a cylon, and who’ll find Earth — Oh wait, Racetrack’ll do all three! – and even guess where BSG’ll go all the way into season four.

comander-chuck.jpgI hope everyone’s having a good New Year’s Day today, hanging out, having some traditional food — whatever that might be for you — and enjoying the last vestiges of the holidays.

I also hope you’ll enjoy the bonus ‘cast this week.  I realize it contains no BSG content, but it was so much fun we thought you might enjoy it — and thought maybe it’d help take the pain out of going back to work.  We had a great time visiting with the Very Jerry, and hope he’ll visit again.

Anyway, have an enjoyable holiday, and we’ll see you this Friday with guest Tony Daniel.
